Sometimes, but it takes planning. Hilton Head follows FAA rules, and South Carolina has no state drone license. The catch is land: much of the island is private gated communities, such as Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes, which generally don't allow drones, and Hilton Head Island Airport puts controlled airspace over the north end. Your best options are private property where you have permission, after an airspace check.

Who controls the land
| Area | Drone rule |
|---|---|
| Gated communities (Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard, Port Royal and others) | Usually prohibited by the community; ask the POA |
| Resorts, hotels and rentals | Owner or manager's permission |
| Town beach parks and public parks | The town code has no drone section; ask the town before launching |
| Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge | Don't fly without refuge permission |
| Private home or rental yard | OK with the owner's permission and airspace clearance |
Private communities set rules for their roads, beaches and amenities. Even if the beach below the high tide line is public, launching from a community's property without permission can get you removed. Rental agreements often repeat the community ban, so read yours.
Airspace
- Hilton Head Island Airport sits at the north end of the island with controlled airspace around it. Request LAANC authorization before flying there.
- Savannah/Hilton Head International is across the state line in Georgia.
- Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and Parris Island to the north bring military traffic and restrictions.
Check B4UFLY or Aloft at your exact launch point. Golf tournaments and other big events can bring temporary flight restrictions.
Wildlife and crowds
- Sea turtles nest on Hilton Head's beaches in the warm months, roughly May through October. Stay away from marked nests and hatchlings.
- Dolphins and shorebirds are protected. Don't hover low over them or chase them.
- Crowded beaches. Recreational pilots can't fly over people, so fly early or late.
South Carolina rules
South Carolina bans flying within 500 ft of a state prison today, and a broader state drone law (Act 150) takes effect January 1, 2027. It adds a 1,500 ft buffer around military installations, which matters near Beaufort and Parris Island. Hunting Island State Park, a popular day trip, is a South Carolina state park, and the SC State Parks FAQ tells drone pilots to contact the park directly first. Read South Carolina drone laws for details.
Before you fly
- Pass the free TRUST test.
- Register drones of 250 g or more with the FAA ($5 for 3 years).
- Get written permission from the property owner or community.
- Check airspace and TFRs.
A sub-250 g DJI Mini 5 Pro or Mini 4 Pro needs no recreational registration and is easy to keep low and quiet. The DJI Neo is good for quick clips in a rental's yard. Salt air is hard on motors, so wipe the drone down after each beach flight. Heading up the coast? See drone laws in Myrtle Beach.
