Can you fly a drone on Jekyll Island?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Not for fun. Jekyll Island is owned by the State of Georgia and managed by the Jekyll Island Authority (JIA), a state agency that sets the rules for the island's beaches, historic district, parks and roads. The JIA's Jekyll Island State Park Rules and Regulations (Sec. 10-191 of the Authority's code) prohibit flying drones unless you're operating in a professional capacity with permission from the Authority and under FAA licensing rules. That covers Driftwood Beach and the rest of the island.

Drone rules on Jekyll Island
Jekyll Island is state-owned and managed by the Jekyll Island Authority, whose park rules prohibit recreational drone flying. Nearby Cumberland Island bans drones too.

Why the landowner matters

Georgia preempts most local drone laws (O.C.G.A. 6-1-4), but it still allows governments to ban recreational launch and landing on public property they own or lease. On Jekyll, that's nearly everything outside private homes and hotels, and the JIA's rule prohibits recreational drone flying outright. Even from a hotel or rental, you'd be flying over JIA land, beaches and crowds.

Professional flights

The JIA rule allows drone flights only for people operating in a professional capacity, with permission from the Authority and in line with FAA licensing (Part 107). Contact the Jekyll Island Authority before your trip and tell them:

  • Where you want to launch and land
  • Date, time and how long you'll fly
  • Your Part 107 certificate and insurance details

Wedding and real estate photographers should expect to need a permit and proof of insurance. Ask about fees and lead time.

Wildlife on Jekyll

Jekyll is home to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and loggerhead sea turtles nest on its beaches in summer. Shorebirds nest and rest on the beaches and marshes too. Even with permission:

  • Stay away from marked turtle nests and hatchlings.
  • Don't fly low over shorebird flocks or nesting areas.
  • Keep away from dolphins and manatees in the river and sound.

Airspace

Brunswick Golden Isles Airport and McKinnon St. Simons Island Airport are nearby, and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is to the south. Check B4UFLY or Aloft at your launch spot, and request LAANC authorization if you're in controlled airspace.

Nearby places

  • Cumberland Island National Seashore bans drones, like all National Park Service units.
  • St. Simons Island is mostly county and private land. Check Glynn County rules and get the landowner's permission.
  • Georgia state parks prohibit drones unless you're in a designated area or have written permission.

Georgia also bans flying within 400 ft of ticketed events since 2025. See Georgia drone laws.

Before you fly

  1. Pass the free TRUST test.
  2. Register drones of 250 g or more with the FAA ($5 for 3 years).
  3. For professional work, get the JIA's permission. Recreational flights on the island aren't allowed.
  4. Fly at or below 400 ft, in sight, and not over people.

A light drone is the easiest to get approved and the least disruptive. The DJI Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro weigh 249 g, and the DJI Neo is a simple palm-launch option. For more coastal spots, see can you fly a drone at the beach.
