You don't strictly need a drone landing pad, but it's one of the most useful cheap accessories if you take off from sand, grass, dirt or snow. A pad keeps debris out of the motors, gimbal and vision sensors, gives the drone a flat, clear surface, and makes your takeoff spot easy to see from the air. For a Mini 5 Pro or Mini 4 Pro, a pad around 55 cm (about 22 in) across is plenty; for an Air 3S, go for about 75 cm (about 30 in) or larger.

What a landing pad does
- Protects the drone. Prop wash blows sand, grass and grit into motors and onto the camera lens. Fine sand is especially hard on motor bearings.
- Keeps the gimbal clear. On small drones the camera sits low. Tall grass can block the gimbal at startup and trigger a gimbal error. See gimbal motor overloaded.
- Helps the downward sensors. A pad with a clear pattern gives the vision system something to read during landing.
- Marks your home point so it's easy to find from the air and keeps people back.
When you can skip it
On clean pavement, a wooden deck or a flat rock, a pad adds little. Indoors, a patterned floor is better than a pad that might lift in prop wash.
Choosing a pad
- Size: bigger than the drone's diagonal with props, with room for error. For Minis, about 55 cm; for Air-class drones, 75 cm or more; for larger drones or windy sites, bigger still.
- Weighted edges or stakes: light pads can flip up in prop wash and wind. Stake it or weigh the edges.
- Visibility: two-color, reversible pads (often orange and blue) stand out against grass, sand and snow.
- Foldability: most fold into a small pouch that fits in a drone bag.
Pad for Mini 5 Pro, Mini 4 Pro and Flip
Sub-250 g drones like the Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro sit low, so they suffer most from grass and sand. A small pad makes beach and park launches much safer for the gimbal.
Pad for Air 3S
The Air 3S weighs 724 g and has stronger prop wash than a Mini, so use a larger, staked pad that won't lift.
Hand launch instead?
Some pilots hand-launch and catch to avoid the ground entirely. It's risky with drones that have exposed props. Palm launch is designed for guarded drones like the Neo and Flip; for others, a pad is the safer choice.
Other ground-level tips
- Clear loose leaves and paper before takeoff.
- Calibrate the compass away from metal; some pads have metal stakes or weights, so keep them away from the drone during calibration.
- After beach flights, check motors for sand and wipe the lens and sensors.
