Is your DJI Flip overheating? Causes and fixes

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

A DJI Flip that feels hot after a flight is normal: DJI warns that the motors can be hot after flying. A Flip that overheats on the ground or shows a temperature warning is usually sitting powered on in the sun, flying in heat above its 40° C (104° F) limit, or has a blocked vent. Power it off, move it to shade and let it cool before flying or charging.

Flip temperature limits
Temperature limits from DJI's Flip manual, in Celsius. The drone is rated to operate from -10° to 40° C, and the battery only charges between 5° and 40° C.

What's normal

  • Warm motors after landing. DJI says not to touch the motors after flight, as they may be hot.
  • A warm battery. Batteries heat up during discharge. DJI also notes a battery can feel warm when it's slowly discharging itself in storage.
  • A warm camera. The camera generates heat, which is why DJI says not to block its ventilation holes.

Common causes of real overheating

  1. Powered on but not flying. A drone sitting on a table or in your hand while you change settings has little airflow. Configure in the shade, or power off between shots.
  2. Hot weather. DJI rates the Flip to operate from -10° to 40° C (14° to 104° F). On a hot day, a dark surface or direct sun can push it past that.
  3. Blocked vents. DJI says not to block any ventilation holes on the motors, body or camera. Remove stickers or covers, and don't leave it in a bag while it's on.
  4. Charging right after flight. The battery stops charging if its cells pass 55° C (131° F). DJI says to wait for it to cool to the allowed charging range first.
  5. Storage in a hot car. DJI says to store batteries and the controller somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight, and never outside -10° to 45° C (14° to 113° F).

What to do when it warns you

  1. Land if you're flying. Don't push on through a temperature warning.
  2. Power off and move the Flip to shade. Remove the battery.
  3. Let it cool naturally. Don't put it in a fridge or freezer: condensation can form inside.
  4. Check the vents and props for debris before the next flight.
  5. Update firmware in DJI Fly, then fly again in cooler conditions.

When it's a fault

Contact DJI support or start a repair if:

  • The Flip gets hot within a few minutes of power-on in mild weather
  • One motor is much hotter than the others (also check for an ESC error)
  • The battery swells, smells or gets hot while unused (see swollen drone battery)
  • The warning appears on every flight even in cool air

For overheating warnings on other models, read DJI overheating warning. For cold-weather limits, see flying a drone in cold weather. More on the drone is in the Flip guide.
