Can you fly a DJI drone with an Xbox controller?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No, you can't fly a DJI drone with an Xbox controller or any other Bluetooth game controller. DJI drones fly only with DJI's own control devices: controllers like the RC-N3 and DJI RC 2, the RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3 with DJI goggles, or, on the Neo and Flip, the on-screen joysticks in DJI Fly. DJI's manuals don't list game controllers as supported. If you like gamepad-style flying, the RC-N3 has the same two-stick layout and holds your phone as the screen.

Control a DJI drone with...
DJI's manuals list only DJI control devices and DJI Fly's virtual sticks. Game controllers can work in some PC simulators; check the simulator's support.

Why a game controller won't work

  • The drone talks to its controller over DJI's own radio link, not Bluetooth. A gamepad can't link to the drone.
  • DJI Fly doesn't map gamepads to flight controls. Even on the Neo and Flip, where the phone can fly the drone, you use the virtual sticks on screen.
  • Safety features like the Flight Pause/RTH button, flight mode switch and failsafe behavior are built into DJI's controllers.

What to use instead

DJI RC 2 Same sticks, built-in 5.5 in screen Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Flip, Air 3S and more

Stick layout: Xbox vs DJI

If you play games, a DJI controller will feel familiar. In the default Mode 2:

  • Left stick: up/down (throttle) and turn left/right (yaw).
  • Right stick: forward/back (pitch) and sideways (roll).

The difference: DJI sticks don't need to be held. Let go and a GPS drone hovers in place. On the Neo's virtual sticks you can also switch the stick mode in DJI Fly's Control settings.

Flying with a gamepad in a simulator

Want to practice with an Xbox controller? Use a PC drone simulator that accepts gamepads, and check the simulator's own supported-controller list. For more realistic FPV practice, DJI's FPV Remote Controller 3 manual lists support for Liftoff, Uncrashed, DRL and DCL, so you can practice on the same radio you'll fly with.

Other drones and gamepads

Some hobby and toy drones, and some custom FPV builds, can be set up with game controllers through third-party software. That's outside DJI's system, often lacks failsafes, and isn't something we recommend for a camera drone you care about.

Rules don't change with the controller

Whatever you fly with: pass the free TRUST test, stay at or under 400 ft, keep the drone in sight, and check airspace first. Drones under 250 g, like the Neo, need no FAA registration for recreational flying.

Gamer looking for an easy first drone? The DJI Neo flies from your phone or palm, and adds real sticks with the DJI RC-N3. More in is it hard to fly a drone?

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
