To unlock a DJI geo zone, log in to DJI Fly with the drone connected and online, then either follow the unlock prompt that appears when you take off in (or fly into) an Authorization Zone, or request Self-Unlocking on DJI's FlySafe site (fly-safe.dji.com) and sync the license in DJI Fly. For areas that need more, DJI offers Custom Unlocking. In the US, DJI stopped locking most zones on January 13, 2025, so most current drones now show a warning you acknowledge instead.

What the zones mean
DJI's GEO system divides restricted areas into:
| Zone | What DJI Fly does |
|---|---|
| Restricted Zone | Blocks flight; needs Custom Unlocking where allowed |
| Authorization Zone | Blocks takeoff until you self-unlock |
| Warning Zone | Shows a warning; you can fly |
| Enhanced Warning Zone | Asks you to confirm before flying |
| Altitude Zone | Limits altitude |
In Warning Zones you can fly, but check what the warning is about and whether FAA rules apply. GEO zones cover places like airports, large event venues, emergency areas such as wildfires, prisons, power plants, government and military sites. DJI's map is at fly-safe.dji.com.
What changed in the US
On January 13, 2025, DJI stopped locking most US geo zones. Most current DJI drones show a warning in DJI Fly instead, and you choose whether to continue. A DJI drone can still stop you if:
- The firmware or app is out of date, so it still has the old locks.
- The FlySafe database hasn't refreshed. Open DJI Fly online before your flight. Newer manuals add a manual check under Settings > About > FlySafe Data.
- It's a zone DJI still enforces.
- The drone has no GPS lock, so it can't tell where it is.
Self-Unlocking an Authorization Zone
From DJI's manuals (Mini 4 Pro, Air 3S, Avata 2 and others):
- Update the drone, controller and DJI Fly, and log in to your DJI account.
- Request the unlock on the DJI FlySafe website, or simply take off in or fly to the zone and follow the DJI Fly prompts.
- Sync the approved license through DJI Fly.
- Fly within the unlocked area and time window.
DJI warns that once inside an unlocked zone, the drone can't fly out of it, and if the Home Point is outside, it can't return home. Take off from inside the zone.
Custom Unlocking is for special cases, with a user-defined area and supporting documents. Request it on the FlySafe site well before the job.
Avata 2 and goggles
The Avata 2 uses the same system. DJI's manual gives the same Self-Unlocking and Custom Unlocking options, with prompts and license sync through DJI Fly. Update the goggles and drone first, since out-of-date firmware is the usual reason a zone stays locked.
A DJI unlock is not FAA permission
This is the part people miss. DJI's warning or unlock only affects DJI's software. In the US:
- Controlled airspace near airports needs authorization through LAANC or FAADroneZone, even if DJI Fly lets you take off.
- TFRs (stadiums, VIP visits, wildfires) are federal restrictions. Never fly near a wildfire.
- National parks ban drones without a permit, whatever the app shows. See drone no-fly zones.
Check B4UFLY or Aloft before every flight. More in can you fly a drone near an airport?
Still locked?
- Update everything and restart.
- Log out and back in to DJI Fly while online.
- Wait for a strong GPS fix.
- Check the zone type on DJI's map and request the right unlock.
- Contact DJI support for Custom Unlocking. Our contact page can point you in the right direction.
