How to update DJI firmware (drone, controller and batteries)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

To update DJI firmware, power on the controller and drone, connect your phone or DJI RC 2 to the internet, open DJI Fly, and tap the update prompt when it appears. DJI Fly downloads the firmware, installs it and restarts the drone. Then insert each spare battery and power on so it updates too. If the app won't update, use DJI Assistant 2 on a Windows or Mac computer with a USB cable.

Two ways to update DJI firmware
From DJI's help center. DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) is v2.1.42 as of September 2026. Don't power off or close the app during an update.

Update in DJI Fly

From DJI's help center:

  1. Charge the drone and controller. DJI sets minimums per model; for example, its Mini 4 Pro manual asks for 40% on the drone and 20% on the controller.
  2. Power on the controller and drone and let them link.
  3. When DJI Fly shows that new firmware is available, tap Update.
  4. Keep the phone or RC online while it downloads.
  5. Tap Update again to install. When the progress bar finishes, the drone restarts.

Don't power anything off, lock the phone or leave the app during the update. A limp gimbal and blinking lights during the install are normal.

Update the controller

Screen controllers like the DJI RC 2 update through the same DJI Fly prompts. RC-N controllers update while connected to the phone and drone. If DJI Fly reports "inconsistent firmware," something in the set is behind; update until the warning clears.

Update every battery

Battery firmware is updated through the drone. Insert each battery in turn, power on, connect to DJI Fly and accept any update. DJI says that if two middle LEDs on a battery stay lit, or DJI Fly shows "Inconsistent Firmware Found," the battery update failed: power on with that battery and update again in DJI Fly, or use DJI Assistant 2.

Update with DJI Assistant 2 (computer)

  1. Download DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) from your drone's page in DJI's Download Center. Version 2.1.42 came out September 22, 2026.
  2. Power on the drone and connect it to the computer with a USB data cable.
  3. Open Assistant 2, log in and select the drone under connected devices.
  4. Wait for the firmware list to load, choose a version and click to upgrade.
  5. The drone restarts when it's done. Connect the controller and repeat.

On a Mac, DJI says the installer may need approval in Privacy & Security, plus a USB driver. More in DJI Fly on PC or Mac.

Update the DJI Fly app

App updates are separate from firmware. On iPhone, update DJI Fly in the App Store. On Android, download the newest APK from DJI and install it over the old one; see install DJI Fly on Android. In October 2026 the current version is v1.21.12. New firmware often requires a minimum DJI Fly version, listed in each drone's release notes.

Find your version and release notes

In DJI Fly's camera view, tap ··· then About to see app, aircraft and RC firmware versions. Release notes, with dates and what changed, are on each drone's downloads page at dji.com. For model specifics, see pages like Mini 4 Pro firmware update.

Will DJI firmware updates stop because of the US ban?

Not yet. DJI drones that were FCC-authorized before the December 2025 Covered List decision stay legal to own and fly, and in May 2026 the FCC allowed firmware and software updates for them to continue until January 1, 2029. See Is DJI banned in the US?.

If the update fails

Restart everything and try again, charge up, switch to a stronger network, free storage on the phone, then try Assistant 2 with a different cable and USB port. Step by step: DJI firmware update failed.
