DJI Mavic 4 Pro ActiveTrack and follow-me modes explained

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Yes, the DJI Mavic 4 Pro has ActiveTrack. It's part of FocusTrack, alongside Spotlight and Point of Interest. Select a person, vehicle or boat on screen and the drone follows it, either along a direction you set (Manual) or on a path it plans itself (Automatic Movement). DJI lists the max follow distance as 20 m for people and 100 m for vehicles and boats, with tracking speed up to 15 m/s.

Mavic 4 Pro ActiveTrack limits
From DJI's Mavic 4 Pro manual. The drone tracks at up to 15 m/s and avoids obstacles while tracking when its vision system can see, but it can't dodge moving objects.

The three FocusTrack modes

Mode What it does
Spotlight You fly manually; the camera stays pointed at the subject
Point of Interest The drone circles the subject
ActiveTrack The drone follows the subject

Spotlight and Point of Interest work on still subjects and on moving people, vehicles and boats. ActiveTrack is for moving people, vehicles and boats only.

Manual vs Automatic Movement

  • Manual: tap or slide the trace wheel to set the direction the drone follows from, behind, beside or in front. You can also adjust height and distance with the sticks, and set tracking parameters in the FocusTrack settings.
  • Automatic Movement: tap AUTO and the drone keeps adjusting its path around the subject based on the surroundings. It uses DJI's default parameters, and supports only people and vehicles. Moving a stick or the trace wheel turns it off.

How to start ActiveTrack

  1. Take off in an open area with good light.
  2. Drag a box around the subject, or tap the FocusTrack icon on the left of the screen.
  3. Choose ActiveTrack and set a direction, or tap AUTO.
  4. To stop, press the Flight Pause button or tap the FocusTrack icon again.

Limits from DJI's manual

  • Subject speed: DJI recommends subjects under 12 m/s (about 27 mph). Faster subjects may be lost.
  • Drone speed: up to 15 m/s while tracking, per the spec sheet.
  • Light: avoid very dark (under 5 lux) or very bright (over 10,000 lux) scenes.
  • Obstacles: the drone bypasses obstacles in ActiveTrack regardless of your obstacle-avoidance setting, when the vision system is working. It can't avoid moving objects such as people, animals or vehicles.
  • Avoid: thin branches and power lines, water and glass, plain white walls, snow fields and deserts.
  • Subject swaps: the drone may switch subjects if two pass close together.
  • People: DJI recommends tracking people but not children, and following local privacy laws.

Tips for better tracking footage

  • Start with the subject clearly separated from the background.
  • Keep inside the follow limits: 20 m for people, so plan for a close, low shot.
  • Do a dry run over the route before your subject sets off.

The rules still apply

You must keep the drone in visual line of sight, and you can't fly over moving vehicles or people who aren't part of the operation. Tracking someone for a paid job needs a Part 107 certificate. See Part 107.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
