Can you map with the DJI Mavic 4 Pro? Photogrammetry and LiDAR questions

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Not as a professional mapping drone. The DJI Mavic 4 Pro does have a LiDAR, but it's a forward-facing sensor for obstacle detection at night, not a mapping LiDAR that scans terrain or builds point clouds. DJI also says the Mavic 4 Pro works only with the DJI Fly app, which has waypoint routes but no automated grid-mapping missions, and there's no RTK option. Its 100 MP photos can still make good informal 3D models.

Mavic 4 Pro for mapping
DJI says the Mavic 4 Pro works only with the DJI Fly app, and its LiDAR is for night obstacle sensing. For real mapping, use an enterprise drone.

What the Mavic 4 Pro LiDAR does

From DJI's specs and FAQ, the forward LiDAR measures obstacles from 0.5 to 25 m at night, with a 60° field of view. It lets the drone sense obstacles ahead in near-darkness (below 0.1 lux) and supports safer Smart RTH after dark. It doesn't record data you can export or measure the ground. So "Mavic 4 Pro LiDAR mapping" isn't something the drone does. See Mavic 4 Pro obstacle avoidance.

Why it isn't a mapping drone

  • DJI Fly only. DJI's FAQ says the Mavic 4 Pro can only be used with DJI Fly. Mapping apps that plan grid flights with set overlap aren't an option.
  • No RTK. Positioning is GPS, Galileo and BeiDou, fine for pictures but not for centimeter-level surveys.
  • No mechanical shutter listed. Enterprise mapping cameras use one to avoid distortion when shooting on the move. DJI doesn't list one for the Mavic 4 Pro.

What you can do with a Mavic 4 Pro

  • Detailed 3D models of small sites. Fly manual orbits at two or three heights with overlapping photos from the 100 MP Hasselblad camera, then process them in photogrammetry software. Results can look excellent, but scale and accuracy aren't guaranteed.
  • Repeatable routes. Waypoint Flight saves a route you can repeat later to show changes over time, useful for construction progress. DJI also added cloud storage for waypoint tasks.
  • Detail from a distance. The 70 mm and 168 mm cameras capture roof and facade details without flying close.

If you're paid for any of this, you need a Part 107 certificate. See Part 107.
