DJI Mini 3 vs Mini 5 Pro: which should you buy?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Get the Mini 3 ($461) if you want the most drone for the money and mostly fly in open spaces: it has a 48 MP sensor, true vertical shooting and 38 minutes of rated flight. Get the Mini 5 Pro ($835) if image quality and safety matter more than price: it adds a 1-inch 50 MP sensor, 4K/60 HDR and 4K/120 slow motion, 10-bit D-Log M, ActiveTrack and omnidirectional sensing with forward LiDAR. Both stay under 250 g with the standard battery, so neither needs FAA registration for recreational flying.

The key differences

Camera. The Mini 5 Pro's 1-inch sensor has roughly 1.6 times the surface area of the Mini 3's 1/1.3-inch sensor, so it captures cleaner images at sunrise, sunset and in cloudy weather, with more dynamic range. It records 4K at up to 60 fps for normal video and up to 120 fps for slow motion, with 10-bit D-Log M and HLG for grading. The Mini 3 records 4K/30 in a standard color profile. In bright daylight the gap narrows, but in low light it's large.

Safety. The Mini 5 Pro senses obstacles in every direction, with a forward LiDAR that DJI says supports omnidirectional obstacle sensing down to 1 lux at night. The Mini 3 senses only the ground below it. For new pilots and anyone flying near trees, that's the biggest practical difference.

Tracking. The Mini 5 Pro can follow you hiking, biking or running with ActiveTrack. The Mini 3 has no tracking at all, only QuickShots and Panorama.

Wind. The Mini 5 Pro is rated for 12 m/s winds versus 10.7 m/s, and it's faster at 18 m/s in Sport mode. On a windy beach or ridge it holds position and returns home more confidently.

Flight time. The two are close: 38 minutes for the Mini 3 versus 36 for the Mini 5 Pro. Both accept a Plus battery for around 51 to 52 minutes, but that puts either drone over 250 g, so it then needs FAA registration and Remote ID.

Price and availability. The Mini 5 Pro costs $374 more. DJI never launched it on its US store, so our stock is limited, though it's legal to buy and fly. See Mini 5 Pro in the USA.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the Mini 3 to film yourself. It can't follow you.
  • Paying for the Mini 5 Pro and only shooting auto JPEGs. Its advantages show most in RAW photos and D-Log M video.
  • Forgetting about weight. At 249.9 g, the Mini 5 Pro is right at the limit. Anything you add, like a heavier battery or accessory, can push it over.

Quick answers

Is the Mini 5 Pro worth $374 more? If you care about low-light quality, slow motion or tracking, yes. For casual daytime landscapes, the Mini 3 is excellent value.

What about the Mini 4 Pro? It's the same $835 as the Mini 5 Pro with a smaller 1/1.3-inch sensor. See Mini 3 vs Mini 4 Pro.
