DJI Mavic 3 Classic vs Mini 5 Pro: which should you buy?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Get the DJI Mavic 3 Classic ($1,407) if you want the bigger Four Thirds Hasselblad sensor, an adjustable aperture, 5.1K video and 46-minute flights in a drone that holds steady in wind. Get the DJI Mini 5 Pro ($835) if you want a 1-inch camera in a drone under 250 g that skips FAA registration for hobby flying, fits in a jacket pocket and costs $572 less. The Classic has the edge in image quality and endurance; the Mini 5 Pro wins on size, rules and price.

The key differences

Sensor size vs pixel count. The Classic's Four Thirds sensor is larger than the Mini 5 Pro's 1-inch sensor, so it captures more light. That shows as wider dynamic range in sunsets and cleaner shadows. The Mini 5 Pro has more pixels (50 MP vs 20 MP), which helps when you crop in daylight. For prints and heavy color grading, the Classic still has the edge. For social posts and travel photos, both look excellent.

Adjustable aperture. The Classic's lens stops down from f/2.8 to f/11. That gives more control over exposure and deeper focus for landscapes. The Mini 5 Pro has a fixed f/1.8 lens, so ND filters do that job. Its Fly More Combo includes an ND set.

Video. The Classic records 5.1K at up to 50 fps and offers the full D-Log profile for grading. The Mini 5 Pro records 4K at up to 120 fps for slow motion in 10-bit D-Log M or HLG, and its gimbal can roll for true vertical video. If you post Reels and Shorts, the Mini 5 Pro is easier.

Flight time and wind. The Classic is rated for 46 minutes, ten more than the Mini 5 Pro. Both carry a 12 m/s wind rating, but the heavier 895 g Classic generally feels more planted in gusts and has more speed to get home.

Night sensing. The Mini 5 Pro adds forward LiDAR. DJI says it supports obstacle sensing in light as low as 1 lux. The Classic's vision sensors need more light.

Weight and rules

The Mini 5 Pro weighs 249.9 g with the standard battery, with a tolerance of about 4 g. Flown for fun, it doesn't need FAA registration. The Battery Plus pushes it over 250 g. See Mini 5 Pro weight.

The Classic weighs 895 g, so you register it ($5 for 3 years) and fly with Remote ID on. Both need the free TRUST test for hobby flying and Part 107 for paid work.

US availability

The Mavic 3 Classic has been sold in the US for years and stock is steady. The Mini 5 Pro is legal to buy and fly, but DJI didn't launch it here, so our stock is limited. See Mini 5 Pro in the USA.

Which is better for...

Use Better pick
Landscape prints, color grading Mavic 3 Classic
Travel, hiking, carry-on trips Mini 5 Pro
Vertical social video Mini 5 Pro
Windy coasts and mountains Mavic 3 Classic
Real estate on a budget Mini 5 Pro

Common mistakes

  • Assuming 50 MP beats 20 MP everywhere. Sensor size matters more in low light and high contrast.
  • Forgetting to register the Classic. Do it before the first flight and mark the number on the drone.
  • Skipping ND filters. The Mini 5 Pro's fixed aperture means you need them for smooth daylight video.

Quick answers

Is the Mavic 3 Classic outdated? It's an older design, but its 4/3 sensor still beats every sub-250 g drone in dynamic range.

Which is better for beginners? The Mini 5 Pro. It's lighter, cheaper to crash and has LiDAR-assisted sensing.

Do the batteries swap? No. Each uses its own battery.
