Do you need a license or registration to fly the DJI Mini 4 Pro?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

For fun with the standard battery, you don't need an FAA license or registration to fly the DJI Mini 4 Pro, because it weighs under 249 g. You do need to pass the free TRUST test and carry proof. Two things change that: fitting the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus (the drone then weighs over 250 g and must be registered), or flying for any business purpose, which requires a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and registration at any weight.

Mini 4 Pro: license and registration
FAA rules for the Mini 4 Pro. The standard battery keeps it under 250 g; the Battery Plus takes it over, which brings registration and Remote ID.

Recreational flying (for fun)

Setup TRUST certificate FAA registration Remote ID
Standard battery (under 249 g) Required Not required Not required
Battery Plus (over 250 g) Required Required Required (built in)

Recreational rules still apply at any weight:

  • Pass the free TRUST test and carry your certificate.
  • Follow a community-based organization's safety guidelines.
  • Fly at or below 400 ft above the ground in uncontrolled (Class G) airspace.
  • Get authorization through LAANC or DroneZone before flying in controlled airspace.
  • Keep the drone in your visual line of sight. Don't fly over people or moving vehicles.

Commercial flying (Part 107)

If you're paid, or the flight supports a business (real estate photos, roof inspections, client videos, monetized content), you're flying under Part 107. You need:

  1. A Remote Pilot Certificate. Pass the FAA knowledge test at an approved testing center (minimum age 16), then complete free online recurrent training every 24 months. See Part 107.
  2. Registration of the drone, even under 250 g. $5, valid 3 years.
  3. Remote ID. Registered drones must broadcast Remote ID. DJI's manual says the Mini 4 Pro's built-in Remote ID only activates with the Battery Plus, so commercial pilots typically fly it with the Plus battery or fit a broadcast module. Check the FAA's current guidance. More in Mini 4 Pro Remote ID.

How to register a Mini 4 Pro

  1. Go to FAADroneZone and create an account.
  2. Choose Recreational (one number covers all your recreational drones) or Part 107 (each drone registered separately).
  3. Pay $5. Registration lasts 3 years.
  4. Add the drone's serial number for Remote ID. Find it in DJI Fly under Settings > About.
  5. Mark your FAA registration number on the outside of the drone.

Step-by-step guide: FAA registration.

Do accessories change your status?

Yes, anything that pushes the drone to 250 g or more. DJI says the propeller guard takes the Mini 4 Pro over 250 g, and add-on lights or mounts can too. Weigh your setup if you're close.

Flying outside the US

Many countries have lighter rules for drones under 250 g, but some still require an operator ID, insurance or a permit. Check the official aviation authority before you travel. See drone laws by state for US state rules and traveling with a drone.

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
