In the US you can fly the DJI Mini 4 Pro up to 400 ft (about 120 m) above the ground, the FAA limit for both recreational and Part 107 flights. The drone's own limits are different: DJI rates its maximum takeoff altitude at 4,000 m (13,123 ft) above sea level with the standard battery, and you choose a software ceiling in DJI Fly. Staying under 400 ft is your job, so set the limit to 120 m.

Three different "max altitudes"
| Number | What it means |
|---|---|
| 400 ft AGL | The legal US limit, measured above the ground below the drone |
| Your DJI Fly Max Altitude | The software ceiling you set, measured from the takeoff point |
| 4,000 m above sea level | The highest elevation DJI says it can take off from (standard battery) |
So you can launch from a 10,000 ft trailhead, but you still can't climb more than 400 ft above the ground there.
Takeoff altitude by setup
| Setup | Max takeoff altitude |
|---|---|
| Standard battery | 4,000 m (13,123 ft) |
| Battery Plus | 3,000 m (9,843 ft) |
| Propeller guard with standard battery | 1,500 m (4,921 ft) |
DJI says the battery and aircraft perform worse at high elevations, and braking distance grows. Above 3,000 m, it asks pilots to leave at least 20 m vertical and 25 m horizontal braking room.
How to set the altitude limit
- In DJI Fly, open Settings > Safety.
- Under Flight Protection, set Max Altitude. 120 m (about 394 ft) is a good US setting.
- Set Max Distance too if you want a horizontal fence.
- Set your RTH Altitude above nearby obstacles, and below your Max Altitude.
When the drone reaches the limit, DJI Fly shows "Max flight altitude reached" and it won't climb further. If you lower Max Altitude below the drone's current height during Return to Home, DJI says it descends to the new limit first.
Why it won't go above 30 m
If the drone powers on without a strong GPS signal, DJI caps its height:
- 30 m above the takeoff point in good light.
- 2 m above the ground in poor light when the 3D infrared sensor is working.
- 30 m in poor light if the infrared sensor isn't working.
The cap lifts as soon as GNSS signal strength reaches 2 bars once during that power cycle, and it stays lifted. Fix: take off in an open area at least 10 m from buildings and wait for a good GPS lock. If you still see an altitude warning, read DJI altitude warning.
Watch the terrain
DJI Fly measures height from where you took off, not from the ground below. Fly off a hilltop over a valley and you may be well over 400 ft above the ground while the app shows less. Fly from a valley toward a ridge and the reverse happens. Near structures, Part 107 pilots may fly up to 400 ft above the structure's top within 400 ft of it.
Controlled airspace and GEO zones
Near airports the limit may be lower, or zero. Check B4UFLY or Aloft and request LAANC authorization where needed. DJI's GEO zones and Altitude Zones may also limit height. See drone no-fly zones.
