The DJI Mini 3 can fly up to 500 m (about 1,640 ft) above its takeoff point, according to DJI. In the US, though, the legal limit is 400 ft (about 120 m) above the ground for both recreational and Part 107 pilots, so set DJI Fly's Max Altitude to 120 m. Separately, the Mini 3 can take off from places up to 4,000 m (13,123 ft) above sea level with its standard battery.

The Mini 3's altitude numbers
| Limit | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Max flight altitude (software setting) | 500 m (1,640 ft) above takeoff | DJI FAQ |
| US legal limit | 400 ft (120 m) above ground | FAA |
| Max takeoff altitude, standard battery | 4,000 m (13,123 ft) above sea level | DJI specs |
| Max takeoff altitude, Battery Plus | 3,000 m (9,843 ft) | DJI specs |
| With propeller guard, standard battery | 1,500 m (4,921 ft) | DJI manual |
| Weak GPS at power-on | 30 m (98 ft) height cap | DJI manual |
| Not logged in to DJI Fly | 30 m height, 50 m range | DJI manual |
| No GPS, hovering | 5 m (16 ft) max | DJI manual |
"Max takeoff altitude" means the elevation of the place you launch from, not how high you fly. Thin mountain air reduces lift and battery performance.
US rules
- Recreational: fly at or below 400 ft above ground in uncontrolled (Class G) airspace. In controlled airspace, get LAANC or DroneZone authorization, which may set a lower limit. See LAANC explained.
- Part 107: max 400 ft above ground, or within 400 ft of a structure, staying no higher than 400 ft above its top.
400 ft is measured from the ground below the drone. On a hillside or cliff, DJI Fly's height reading (from the takeoff point) can differ a lot from your height above the terrain. See how high can a drone fly.
How to set the Mini 3's max altitude
- Open DJI Fly and connect to the drone.
- Tap the three-dot menu, then Safety.
- Under Flight Protection, set Max Altitude to 120 m (or lower if your authorization requires it).
- Set the max distance if you want a radius limit too.
- While you're there, set the RTH altitude above nearby obstacles but below your max altitude.
DJI's manual says going above the default limit triggers a warning and disclaimer you must accept.
Why it might stop climbing early
- "Height limit reached" warning: you've hit your Max Altitude setting.
- Weak GPS at power-on: the drone caps height at 30 m. Restart in an open area once GPS is strong.
- Not logged in: DJI says flight is restricted to 30 m height and 50 m range when DJI Fly isn't connected or logged in during flight.
- GEO zones: near airports and restricted areas, DJI's altitude zones can cap height. See DJI altitude warning and how to unlock DJI GEO zones.
Flying high safely
- Wind is usually stronger at altitude. The Mini 3 is rated for 10.7 m/s (about 24 mph). See Mini 3 wind resistance.
- A 248 g drone is hard to see at 400 ft. Keep it in visual line of sight; that's the law.
- Watch for manned aircraft and descend if you hear or see one.
Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
