In the US you can fly the DJI Mini 5 Pro up to 400 ft (about 120 m) above the ground, the FAA limit for both recreational and Part 107 flights. The drone's own figures are different: DJI rates its maximum takeoff altitude at 6,000 m (19,685 ft) above sea level with the standard battery, and you set a software ceiling in DJI Fly. Staying under 400 ft is your responsibility, so set Max Altitude to 120 m.

Three different "max altitudes"
| Number | What it means |
|---|---|
| 400 ft AGL | The legal US limit, measured above the ground below the drone |
| Your DJI Fly Max Altitude | The software ceiling you set, measured from the takeoff point |
| 6,000 m above sea level | The highest elevation DJI says it can take off from (standard battery) |
So you can launch from a high mountain trailhead, but you still can't climb more than 400 ft above the ground there.
Max takeoff altitude by setup
| Setup | Max takeoff altitude |
|---|---|
| Standard battery | 6,000 m (19,685 ft) |
| Battery Plus | 4,500 m (14,764 ft) |
| Quick-Release 360° Propeller Guard | 2,000 m (6,562 ft), with a 120 m flight height limit |
DJI notes that the drone and battery perform worse at high elevations and that braking distance grows with altitude. Leave extra room.
How to set or increase the altitude limit
- Connect the drone and open DJI Fly's camera view.
- Open Settings > Safety.
- Set Max Altitude. 120 m (about 394 ft) is a good US setting.
- Set Max Distance if you want a horizontal fence.
- Set RTH Altitude above nearby obstacles and below your Max Altitude.
When the drone reaches the limit, DJI Fly shows "Max flight altitude reached" and it won't climb further. If you lower Max Altitude below the drone's height during Return to Home, DJI says it descends to the new limit first.
Why it won't go above 30 m
Not logged in. DJI limits flight to 30 m (98.4 ft) height and 50 m (164 ft) range when DJI Fly isn't connected or logged in. App login lasts 90 days; reconnect to the internet and log in again.
Weak GPS at power-on. Per DJI's manual:
- 30 m above the takeoff point in good light.
- 2 m above the ground in poor light when the 3D infrared sensor is working.
- 30 m in poor light if the infrared sensor isn't working.
The cap lifts once GNSS signal strength reaches 2 bars during that power cycle, and stays lifted. Take off in the open and wait for a solid GPS lock. Still stuck? See DJI altitude warning.
GEO zones. DJI's Altitude Zones (gray on the map) cap height near airports and other sensitive areas.
Watch the terrain
DJI Fly shows height above your takeoff point, not above the ground below the drone. Fly off a hilltop over a valley and you may be well over 400 ft above the ground while the app shows less. Part 107 pilots may fly up to 400 ft above a structure's top when within 400 ft of it.
Controlled airspace
Near airports the legal limit may be lower, or zero. Check B4UFLY or Aloft and request LAANC authorization where needed. See drone no-fly zones.
Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
