The DJI Mini 5 Pro has two kinds of lights: aircraft status indicators that show what the flight system is doing, and an auxiliary light on the bottom that helps the downward sensors in low light. It has no anti-collision strobe. For Part 107 night flights you'd need an add-on strobe visible for 3 statute miles, and at about 249.9 g, almost any add-on pushes the drone to 250 g or more.

The auxiliary light
- Where: on the underside, next to the downward vision system and 3D infrared sensor.
- What it's for: lighting the ground so the downward vision system can position the drone and land in low light. It's not a spotlight for filming.
- Default: Auto. DJI's manual says it turns on automatically in low light when the drone is under 5 m after takeoff.
- Manual control: you can switch it on or off in DJI Fly. Each restart resets it to Auto.
Auxiliary light not coming on? On Auto in daylight or above 5 m, it stays off; that's normal. Set it to On in flight to test it. Update firmware and DJI Fly. If it never lights, contact our repair team.
DJI also notes that even with the auxiliary light on, vision positioning may not be optimal in low light, so fly carefully when GPS is weak.
Aircraft status indicators
When the drone is on with motors stopped, the indicators show its status. From DJI's manual:
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Red, yellow and green alternating | Powering on, self-test |
| Yellow, four blinks | Warming up |
| Slow green blink | GNSS positioning |
| Green double blink, repeating | Vision positioning |
| Slow yellow blink | ATTI mode (no GNSS or vision) |
| Fast yellow blink | Controller signal lost |
| Slow red blink | Takeoff disabled, for example low battery |
| Fast red blink | Critically low battery |
| Solid red | Critical error |
| Red and yellow alternating | Compass calibration needed |
After the motors start, the indicators blink green. DJI's manual says not to block the LED lights on the arms, and notes that lighting requirements vary by region.
Anti-collision lights and night flying in the US
The status indicators aren't anti-collision lights.
- Part 107 at night requires current night training and anti-collision lighting visible for 3 statute miles. That means an add-on strobe.
- Recreational night flying needs lighting that shows the drone's position and orientation.
Weight: the catch with light kits
DJI lists the Mini 5 Pro at about 249.9 g. A clip-on strobe, its mount and adhesive all add grams, so assume the drone will be at 250 g or more. That means FAA registration ($5, 3 years) for recreational pilots too; the drone already has Standard Remote ID built in. Part 107 pilots register at any weight anyway. DJI also warns against adding payloads to the aircraft, so keep any light kit as small and light as possible, mount it where it won't block sensors, and don't cover the forward LiDAR or vision cameras. See FAA registration.
Night flying with a Mini 5 Pro
The Mini 5 Pro is better at night than most Minis. DJI says its nightscape obstacle sensing works down to about 1 lux when surfaces are textured, and the forward LiDAR can detect obstacles ahead to about 25 m at night, also helping Return to Home climb over obstacles. In real darkness, below 1 lux, the vision system stops working, so you're relying on your own eyes and the forward LiDAR only. Set RTH altitude above everything nearby before dusk. See Mini 5 Pro night mode and can you fly a drone at night.
