Diving and snorkeling with the Osmo Action 5 Pro (case, settings)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The Osmo Action 5 Pro is waterproof to 20 m (66 ft) on its own, which covers snorkeling, swimming and shallow dives. For scuba, put it in the Osmo Action 60m Waterproof Case, rated to 60 m (197 ft). DJI also recommends the case for long sessions or high water pressure, and without the case the shutter button is disabled below 10 m.

Before you get wet
Based on DJI's underwater notes for the Action 5 Pro. Below 10 m without the case the shutter button is disabled, so use the 60 m case for real dives.

Snorkeling: no case needed

For snorkeling and pool or surf sessions, the bare camera is fine:

  1. Check that the glass lens cover is tight and undamaged.
  2. Close the battery compartment cover until no red marks show, and close the USB-C port cover.
  3. Attach a float or lanyard. The Osmo Action Floating Case or DJI Floating Handle keeps a dropped camera at the surface.
  4. Start recording before you go under. The touchscreens work when wet but not fully submerged, so use the physical buttons underwater.

Avoid jumping into water with the camera at speed; DJI says the impact can force water in. The FOV Boost Lens and Lens Hood reduce or remove waterproofing, so take them off.

Scuba: use the 60 m case

The Osmo Action Diving Accessory Kit includes the 60 m Waterproof Case, the DJI Floating Handle, a locking screw and three anti-fog inserts. The case alone is sold too.

  • Put an anti-fog insert in the case and keep the inside dry.
  • Make sure the rubber seal is clean and the latch is secure.
  • DJI suggests sinking the empty case for about 5 minutes first to check it.
  • Rinse the case in fresh water after sea dives.

Auto Record and depth display

The Action 5 Pro has a built-in pressure sensor. Swipe down, tap Settings, then Depth & Altitude. In the Diving menu, turn on Auto Record: the camera starts recording at 1 m depth and shows your depth and dive time on screen. You can later add depth data to your video as an overlay in DJI Mimo. A 2025 firmware update improved Auto Record and Auto Stop for diving, so update first.

Best underwater settings

  • Resolution: 4K/30 or 4K/60 for most footage. 4K/120 for slow-motion fish and bubbles, but it uses more battery.
  • Stabilization: RockSteady 3.0. HorizonSteady isn't needed for most dives.
  • Color: Normal color is easiest. D-Log M gives more room to fix color in post if you grade. See Action 5 Pro LUTs.
  • White balance: auto is a good start. DJI built a color temperature sensor into the "O" in the front logo to help with underwater color, so don't cover it.

Water absorbs red light quickly as you go deeper, so footage turns blue and green. A video light helps on deeper dives. More in Action 5 Pro settings.

After the dive

  1. Rinse the camera with fresh tap water and let it air dry. Don't use a hair dryer; DJI says hot air can rupture the mic and vent membranes and end the waterproofing.
  2. If you swap batteries, open the battery cover facing down so water in the gaps doesn't run inside, then wipe the gaps and the red seal.
  3. Let the camera dry before changing the glass lens cover, or the lens can fog.
  4. Never use it in hot springs or chemicals.

Dive trip checklist

  • Two or three spare batteries and a charging case. See battery life.
  • Anti-fog inserts.
  • Fresh-water rinse tub.
  • A spare glass lens cover.
