The best camera drone with zoom for most people is the DJI Air 3S ($1,209): its second camera is a 70 mm medium tele, giving a sharp 3x view and digital zoom to 9x. For longer reach, the Mavic 4 Pro and Mavic 3 Pro ($2,419 each) add a third, longer telephoto camera at 168 mm and 166 mm. For inspection and public safety, enterprise drones like the Matrice 4T reach 112x hybrid zoom and add thermal.
How zoom works on DJI drones
DJI's current camera drones don't have an optical zoom lens. Instead they use several fixed cameras and switch between them, with digital zoom in between. That means:
- Image quality is best at each camera's native focal length (for example 1x and 3x on the Air 3S).
- Digital zoom crops the image, so detail drops as you push toward the maximum.
- Zoom limits depend on mode. Many models allow less zoom in 4K or photo modes than in 1080p.

The Air 3S pairs a 1-inch, 24 mm wide camera with a 70 mm medium tele. The tele compresses backgrounds, which is great for cinematic shots of buildings, mountains and people, and lets you film subjects from farther away. Mini drones: digital zoom only
Mini drones such as the Mini 4 Pro have one camera with digital zoom: DJI lists up to 3x in 4K and 4x in 1080p. Fine for framing, but not for distant detail.
Thermal and enterprise zoom
For search and rescue, inspection and security, enterprise drones combine zoom with thermal:
- Matrice 4T: wide, 70 mm and 168 mm cameras with up to 112x hybrid zoom, plus a 640 x 512 thermal camera and laser rangefinder.
- Mavic 3 Enterprise: 4/3 wide camera plus a tele with up to 56x hybrid zoom; the thermal version adds a thermal camera.

FPV and zoom
FPV drones like the Avata 2 use a single ultra-wide camera with no tele. Zoom isn't part of FPV flying. The older Mavic 2 Zoom, which had a 2x optical zoom lens, is discontinued.
Which should you buy?
- Best all-round with tele: Air 3S.
- Most reach and best image quality: Mavic 4 Pro, or the Mavic 3 Pro for US Care Refresh.
- Work that needs zoom plus thermal: Matrice 4T.
