For most beginners, the best FPV drone is the DJI Avata 2. It comes as a ready kit with DJI Goggles 3 and the RC Motion 3 controller, so you steer by pointing your hand, and it has built-in propeller guards and a Beginner mode. On a tighter budget, a DJI Neo with Goggles N3 and RC Motion 3 gets you flying FPV for about $547. Both use DJI's digital video, so there's no tuning or soldering.

DJI Avata 2: best overall
- Built for FPV. A 377 g drone with built-in propeller guards that help it survive light bumps.
- Easy start. Beginner mode caps speed at 1 m/s until you turn it off.
- Easy ACRO. One-push flips, rolls and power loops with the RC Motion 3.
- Camera. A 1/1.3-inch, 12 MP sensor for good footage, not just a video feed.
- Room to grow. Add the FPV Remote Controller 3 later to learn Manual (acro) mode.
Trade-offs: 23 minutes rated flight time, and at 377 g it must be registered ($5 for 3 years) even for fun.
DJI Neo with Goggles N3: best budget start
- Cheapest way into DJI FPV. About $547 for drone, goggles and controller.
- Light and forgiving. 135 g with full propeller guards, so no FAA registration for recreational flying.
- Glasses friendly. Goggles N3 fit over your own glasses, with no IPD setting to fiddle with.
- Double duty. The Neo also flies from your palm or phone for selfie video.
Trade-offs: 18 minutes rated flight time, a smaller 1/2-inch camera and less wind resistance (DJI rates it to 8 m/s). It's best in calm weather and open parks.

The rules for FPV in the US
- Visual observer. FAA rules require visual line of sight. With goggles on you can't see the drone, so a visual observer must stand next to you and watch it. See are FPV drones legal.
- TRUST test for recreational flying.
- Registration and Remote ID for drones of 250 g or more, like the Avata 2.
- 400 ft limit and no flying over people or moving vehicles.
First-flight tips
- Practice in a simulator. DJI offers a free Virtual Flight app.
- Pick a big open field with no people, trees or wires nearby.
- Start in Beginner or Normal mode. Learn to hover, turn and land before speed.
- Set RTH altitude above the tallest trees. The Avata 2 can't detect obstacles during RTH.
- Keep sessions short. Some people get motion sick in goggles at first. Take breaks.
- Learn Turtle mode on the Avata 2, which flips it upright after a crash landing.
Common mistakes
- Flying alone with goggles on
- Diving at trees or buildings before you can stop reliably
- Forgetting the Avata 2 needs registration
- Buying goggles that don't match your drone. Check compatibility first.
Quick answers
Is FPV hard to learn? With RC Motion 3, most people fly in minutes. Manual mode with sticks takes much longer.
Is the Avata 2 Fly More Combo worth it? Usually. It adds two batteries and a hub for $187, and 23 minute flights go fast.
