A DJI video that won't play is usually encoded in H.265 (HEVC), which some computers, phones and players can't decode without extra software, or it's a high-bitrate 4K file your device can't keep up with. DJI's help center lists exactly those causes, plus a missing decoder. Install an HEVC decoder or convert the file to H.264, and set the camera to record H.264 in future if compatibility matters more than file size.

Why it won't play
DJI MP4 files use one of two video codecs:
- H.264 (AVC): plays almost everywhere.
- H.265 (HEVC): smaller files at the same quality, but needs a decoder.
On the Mini 4 Pro, DJI says 4K/100fps and the HLG and D-Log M color modes only support H.265. On the Osmo Pocket 3, H.265 is the default ("Efficiency"). So many DJI files are H.265 even if you didn't choose it.
How to play H.265 video
- Windows: Windows needs Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store for its built-in apps. A player with its own HEVC decoder also works.
- Mac and iPhone: current macOS and iOS play HEVC natively. If a clip stutters, the file may just be too demanding for the device.
- Android: support depends on the phone. Use a player app that supports HEVC, or convert the file.
- Editing software: most current editors import H.265, but older computers may struggle. Create proxies if your editor supports them.
Convert DJI video to MP4 / H.264
DJI's help center suggests a format converter on your computer. Free tools such as HandBrake can re-encode H.265 to H.264 MP4. Keep the same resolution and frame rate, and use a high quality setting so you don't lose detail. Avoid uploading private footage to unknown online converters.
Record in a more compatible format
- Drones: in DJI Fly's camera settings, set Coding Format to H.264 where your mode allows it.
- Osmo Pocket 3: set Video Compression to Compatibility (H.264) instead of Efficiency (HEVC).
Other reasons a DJI video won't play
- You opened an .LRF file. Osmo Pocket 3 and Osmo Action cameras save .LRF files, low-resolution previews used by DJI Mimo. Open the .MP4 with the same name instead.
- The file is incomplete. A download that failed or a card pulled out mid-recording leaves a broken file. Copy it again with a card reader. See how to transfer photos from a DJI drone.
- It's the live-view cache. Clips cached by DJI Fly are lower quality. Get the original from the drone.
- Slow motion looks broken. Slow Motion mode clips play slowed on purpose. See why DJI videos play in slow motion.
DJI Neo and Osmo Pocket 3
The Neo saves MP4 files to its internal storage. Download them in DJI Fly with QuickTransfer or by USB, then play the downloaded copy. For the Pocket 3 on a computer, see Osmo Pocket 3 not recognized on a computer.
If the original file won't play on two different, recent devices, the file or the card may be damaged. Check the card in DJI drone not reading the SD card.
