Yes, you can fly a drone in Atlanta, but plan around the airspace and parks. Hartsfield-Jackson's Class B airspace covers most of the metro area, so you'll often need LAANC authorization. Georgia law lets cities restrict launching from property they own, so ask Atlanta Parks and Recreation before you launch in a city park. State law also bans flying near gated, ticketed events.

Airspace
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International is one of the busiest airports in the world, and its Class B airspace covers most of the city.
- Peachtree-DeKalb, Fulton County-Brown Field and Dobbins Air Reserve Base add more controlled airspace.
- Stadium TFRs. FAA restrictions go up around Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Truist Park during major games, covering 3 nautical miles and up to 3,000 ft.
Use B4UFLY or Aloft at your launch spot and request LAANC authorization in controlled airspace.
Georgia state drone laws
- Local limits (O.C.G.A. 6-1-4). Since 2017, drone regulation is mostly a state matter. Cities and counties can't create new flight rules, but they can ban recreational launch and landing on public property they own or lease, and keep ordinances adopted before April 1, 2017.
- Ticketed events (2025). Flying within 400 ft of, or over, a gated ticketed event such as a concert, game or festival is a misdemeanor, unless you have the event's consent or another exception applies.
- Privacy (O.C.G.A. 16-11-62). Watching or recording someone in a private place out of public view without consent is a felony, whether by phone or drone.
- Hunting. Georgia DNR prohibits using drones to hunt or locate game.
See Georgia drone laws for details.
Parks around Atlanta
- City of Atlanta parks, including Piedmont Park: Atlanta's municipal code has no drone section of its own, but the city controls its park property and events. Ask Atlanta Parks and Recreation before launching.
- Stone Mountain Park is run by a state authority with its own rules. Ask the park before bringing a drone.
- Georgia state parks and historic sites: the park rules say drone operation is prohibited. Occasional waivers go only to professional commercial projects, with prior approval from the division director, a film application, FAA registration and proof of a Part 107 certificate.
- Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park are National Park Service units, where drones are banned under 36 CFR 1.5.
- Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, north of the city, generally allows drones outside wilderness areas and TFRs.
Do you need a license?
For fun, pass the free TRUST test and register drones of 250 g or more. For paid work like real estate or event video, you need a Part 107 certificate.
Flying downtown
Downtown and Midtown are full of people, traffic, helipads and tall buildings that block GPS and signal. Recreational pilots can't fly over people, and you'll need a legal launch spot on private property with permission. Commercial pilots usually coordinate with building owners.
Recommended drones
For city flying, a light drone with good obstacle sensing is the safest pick. The DJI Mini 4 Pro and Mini 5 Pro have omnidirectional sensing at 249 g, and the DJI Neo is a simple option for selfie clips in your own yard.
Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
