Drone photographers charge by the project, by the hour, or by the day, and rates vary widely by market, niche and deliverables. There is no standard national rate. The right price covers your equipment, insurance, software, travel and editing time plus the income you want, divided by the number of days you can realistically bill. Most established pilots sell fixed packages rather than hourly flying.

The three ways to charge
| Model | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Per project or package | Fixed price for a set of deliverables | Real estate, small business, roofs |
| Hourly | Rate per hour on site, editing billed separately | Events, open-ended shoots |
| Day or half-day rate | Flat rate for a block of time | Film, construction, mapping, crews |
Packages are easiest for clients to buy and protect you from slow editing eating your profit. Day rates suit work where the scope changes on site.
What drives the price
- Deliverables: number of edited photos, video length, color grading, music licensing, raw files.
- Editing time: often equal to or longer than the flight. Price it in.
- Equipment: a thermal or mapping drone costs far more than a camera drone and must earn its keep.
- Airspace and permits: jobs near airports need LAANC or a waiver; city and park permits take time.
- Travel: charge mileage or a travel fee beyond a set radius.
- Turnaround: rush delivery is worth a surcharge.
- Usage rights: a national ad campaign is worth more than a single listing.
- Risk: night work, crowds and tight sites need more planning and insurance.
A simple pricing formula
- Add your yearly costs. Drone replacement over its working life, batteries, insurance, software subscriptions, phone and data, website, marketing, vehicle use and accounting.
- Add the income you need before tax.
- Estimate billable days. Weather, travel, editing and admin cut deeply into this. Be honest.
- Divide. Costs plus income, divided by billable days, gives your minimum day rate. Split it for half days and packages.
- Compare. Look at what competitors in your area list for similar packages. If you're far below, you're leaving money on the table; if far above, your portfolio has to justify it.
Hourly and day rates for pilots
Pilots hired by production companies, survey firms or inspection companies are often paid a day rate, sometimes with the client supplying the aircraft. Ask whether the rate includes your drone, insurance and data processing, and charge more when it does. See how much drone pilots make.
What it costs to get started
Required costs are low: about $175 for the FAA knowledge test plus $5 per drone registration. Prep courses are optional and range from free FAA material to paid online ground schools and in-person classes. Details on Part 107 cost and Part 107 courses.
