The DJI Flip uses the DJI Fly app, and DJI says it works only with DJI Fly. Install it from the App Store on iPhone, or download the APK from DJI's website on Android (it's not on Google Play). You can fly the Flip with a controller (DJI RC-N3, RC-N2 or RC 2), or connect your phone directly over Wi-Fi for short, close-range shots, limited to 30 m (98 ft) high and 50 m (164 ft) away.

Download DJI Fly
- iPhone: App Store, "DJI Fly". DJI lists iOS 13.0 or later, iPhone 11 or newer recommended.
- Android: APK from the DJI Fly download page. DJI lists Android 9.0 or later. See install DJI Fly on Android.
- DJI RC 2: DJI Fly is preinstalled.
If your phone isn't on DJI's tested list and the app misbehaves, see DJI Fly compatible phones.
Three ways to control the Flip
1. With a controller (full features). Use the RC-N3 with your phone, the RC-N2, or the DJI RC 2. This gives you full range, Return to Home, and all flight modes.
2. Phone only (Mobile App Control). DJI Fly connects to the Flip over Wi-Fi.
- Power on the Flip and wait for the self-check.
- Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and location on the phone.
- In DJI Fly, tap Connection Guide at the bottom right of the home screen, pick the Flip, and choose Connect via Mobile Device.
- Select the Flip. The first time, press and hold the Flip's power button to confirm.
Turn off any controller first. In this mode the Flip is limited to 30 m high and 50 m away, Return to Home isn't supported, and DJI says not to fly over water. DJI describes the on-screen joysticks as for fine-tuning position, not a full remote-control experience.
3. Palm control (no phone needed in flight). Pick a mode with the Flip's mode button, hold it to take off from your hand, and it films automatically. It must have connected to DJI Fly by Wi-Fi at least once. Same 30 m and 50 m limits, and no RTH.
Activate the Flip
With a controller: power on the controller and drone (press, then press and hold), open DJI Fly and follow the activation prompts. You need internet. With the RC-N3, connect your phone with the holder cable; on Android choose "charge only" if prompted.
What the app does
- Live view, camera settings, FocusTrack, QuickShots, MasterShots and Hyperlapse
- Audio recording through the phone mic, DJI Mic 2 or Bluetooth earbuds while you film
- QuickTransfer to download clips to your phone
- Firmware updates
- Settings like the fold-to-power-off option and Return to Home
Registration note
The Flip weighs under 249 g with the standard battery, so recreational pilots in the US don't need to register it. You still need the free TRUST certificate. Flying for work requires Part 107 and registration.
