How to edit and export video in the DJI Fly app (and what happened to LightCut)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

To edit video in DJI Fly, open the Album from the home screen, tap Create, and choose Templates for an automatic edit or Pro to cut clips yourself. Add music, then export the finished video to your phone. Download the original files from the drone first so you edit full-quality footage, not the low-resolution preview.

Which DJI editor should you use?
From DJI's help center and Download Center, October 2026. DJI ended LightCut updates in September 2026 and points users to DJI Fly or DJI Mimo.

Step 1: get the original files onto your phone

The editor works on footage saved to your phone. Download clips from the drone with QuickTransfer or through the controller. Don't rely on the video cache: DJI describes it as a copy of the live view, which is lower quality than what the drone records. See transfer photos from a DJI drone.

DJI notes that MasterShots and QuickShots videos appear in the album after you download them to your phone and they finish rendering.

Step 2: edit with Templates (fastest)

  1. On the DJI Fly home screen, tap Album, then Create.
  2. Choose Templates and download one you like.
  3. Import clips. DJI says each template needs a set number of clips or photos; too few or too many and it won't work.
  4. DJI Fly assembles the edit to the music. Tap a clip, filter or volume to adjust it.
  5. To change the template's edit in detail, import it through Pro instead.

Step 3: edit with Pro (more control)

  1. Album > Create > Pro, then pick your clips in order.
  2. Trim and reorder clips and adjust each one. DJI describes Pro simply as manual editing, and the tools available vary with the app version.
  3. Add music: tap Add to open the music library, or import your own. On Android, DJI says to put the file in your local music library or file manager first.
  4. Export and save to your phone, then share.

Music and copyright

DJI says it licensed the fonts, templates and music in DJI Fly's editor, but it doesn't recommend using those edits for profit or commercial work, as that may be copyright infringement. For client work, use music you've licensed yourself.

What happened to LightCut?

LightCut was DJI's recommended editing app, with AI one-tap edits and templates. DJI's Download Center now says updates and feature maintenance for LightCut ended in September 2026, and recommends DJI Mimo or DJI Fly instead. If you still have it installed it may keep working for now, but don't build your workflow around it.

Is DJI Studio free, and is it for drones?

DJI Studio is desktop software for Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later on Apple silicon (M1 or newer), offered as a download in DJI's Download Center (v1.2.11, September 2026). DJI lists it for Osmo 360 footage, where it handles panoramic files and exports for its DaVinci Resolve reframe plugin. It isn't a general drone video editor.

Editing on a computer

For full-resolution editing, color grading D-Log M footage or long projects, copy the originals to a computer and use a desktop editor. Our guides: edit drone footage in DaVinci Resolve and best drone video editing software.

Tips for better edits

  • Shoot a few seconds before and after each move so you have room to trim.
  • Keep clips short: 2 to 5 seconds each works for social video.
  • Shoot vertical in the drone (Portrait mode) for Reels and TikTok instead of cropping later.
  • Free up phone storage before a big export; see clear DJI Fly app storage.
