DJI Fly gets big mostly because of its video cache: while you record, it saves a copy of the live view to your phone or DJI RC 2. To free space, save any clips you want, then clear cached data in Profile > Settings, and lower or turn off Cache When Recording in the camera's storage settings. DJI recommends keeping at least 10 GB free so the app runs smoothly.

How big is DJI Fly?
In October 2026, the Android APK for DJI Fly v1.21.12 is about 720 MB, and Apple's App Store lists the iOS app at about 1.5 GB. That's before any cache, offline maps, firmware packages or downloaded footage. After a season of flying, the app's total storage can be many times its install size.
What fills it up
- Video cache. DJI's manuals describe Cache When Recording: the live view is stored on the phone or controller while the drone records. Each flight adds more.
- Downloaded footage. Files you download in the DJI Fly album, including QuickTransfer downloads and edited videos.
- Firmware packages. Updates download to the phone or RC 2 before they install.
- Offline maps and editing templates and music.
Clear the cache
- Save what you need first. Open the DJI Fly album and download any clips or photos you want to keep to your phone's gallery. The originals stay on the drone's card, but the cache may be the only copy if a card failed.
- From the DJI Fly home screen, tap Profile, then Settings.
- Find the cached data option and clear it. DJI's help center lists cached data under Profile settings, alongside firmware updates and language.
- Restart DJI Fly and check your phone's storage again.
On iPhone, Settings > General > iPhone Storage > DJI Fly shows how much space the app and its data use. On Android, check the app's storage under Settings > Apps. Avoid "Clear data" on Android unless you're troubleshooting, because it also logs you out and resets app settings.
Limit the video cache
In the camera view, tap ···, then Camera and the storage settings. DJI's Mini 4 Pro manual lists two options there:
- Cache When Recording: turn it off to stop saving the live view copy.
- Max Video Cache Capacity: set a lower limit. When the cache is full, DJI says the earliest caches are deleted automatically.
A lower cap is usually better than turning it off. DJI Fly's Trimmed Download feature, which lets you download only part of a clip, depends on the cached video matching the original, so it may stop working without the cache.
On the DJI RC 2
The RC 2 stores the cache in its own 32 GB of memory, of which DJI says about 21 GB is actually available. If it runs low, DJI Fly can lag, refuse a firmware download or crash. DJI's fixes for a screen controller, in order:
- Update the controller firmware.
- Clear the app cache.
- As a last step, clear app data and reset the controller, backing up first.
If your RC 2 has a microSD card, you can move storage to it under Profile > Settings > Storage, per DJI's RC 2 manual.
"Insufficient storage" during a firmware update
Firmware downloads to the phone or RC 2 first. Clear the cache as above, or skip the phone and update with DJI Assistant 2 on a computer. See how to update DJI firmware.
Move footage off the phone
Downloaded clips can be large, especially 4K. Move them to a computer or cloud storage, then delete them from DJI Fly's album. Better still, copy originals straight from the drone with a cable or card reader; see transfer photos from a DJI drone.
App still slow or crashing after clearing space? Read DJI Fly app crashing and check DJI Fly compatible phones. Shop the DJI RC 2 if you'd rather keep flight data off your phone.
