An ESC error on the DJI Mini 5 Pro means the flight controller found a fault in, or lost contact with, the electronic speed controllers that drive the four motors. Restart it once. If the error clears and stays gone, test with a short, low hover. If it comes back, treat it as a hardware fault and don't fly: a motor that stops mid-air brings the drone down.

What the ESC is
ESC stands for electronic speed controller. It takes battery power and drives each motor at the exact speed the flight controller asks for. On the Mini 5 Pro it's built into the drone, not a user part. The short chirp you hear at power-on is the ESCs starting up, and DJI's manuals for its Mini drones ask you to make sure it sounds normal.
Common causes of an ESC error:
- Sand, grass or grit in a motor after landing in dirt
- A bent motor shaft or damaged motor after a crash
- Moisture from rain, fog or a water landing
- A battery that isn't fully seated, or dirty contacts
- An interrupted firmware update
Fixes to try, in order
- Restart cleanly. Power off, remove the battery, check its contacts and click it back in until it's secure.
- Spin each motor by hand. With the drone off, turn each motor slowly. It should be smooth, with no grinding or tight spots. DJI's Mini manuals say to land immediately if a motor is stuck and can't rotate freely. Clear grit with a hand blower, not a probe.
- Check the propellers. Look for nicks, cracks, warping and loose screws before every flight, and replace damaged props with new screws using the included screwdriver.
- Dry it out. If it got wet, stop powering it on. Read what to do when a drone gets wet.
- Update firmware. Update the aircraft, controller and battery in DJI Fly with both devices well charged. DJI says updates can fail below 20% battery or if the connection drops.
- Note when it happened. If the error appeared in flight, DJI support can review the flight record.
When it needs repair
Send it in if:
- The error returns after a restart, cleaning and a firmware update
- One motor stutters, runs much hotter than the others, or won't spin
- The error appeared after a crash or water exposure
- The motors make unusual sounds at power-on
The fix is usually a replacement motor or internal board, done by DJI. DJI Care Refresh covers crash and water damage if you have a plan. Our repair page explains how we open the case with DJI, and Mini 5 Pro repair covers the options.
