How to fly waypoint missions with the DJI Mini 5 Pro

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Yes, the DJI Mini 5 Pro supports Waypoint Flight. In DJI Fly, tap the waypoint icon on the left of the camera view, add points, choose what the camera does at each one, and follow the on-screen steps to fly the route. When you tap the icon again to exit, DJI Fly saves the route to the Library so you can repeat it, for example to film the same scene across seasons or from day to night.

Mini 5 Pro waypoint flight
Based on DJI's Mini 5 Pro user manual. Before takeoff you can only add waypoints on the map. The route saves to the Library when you exit.

Before your first route

  • Update first: drone, controller and DJI Fly. See Mini 5 Pro firmware update.
  • Check obstacle avoidance. Tap settings, then Safety > Manual Obstacle Avoidance. Set to Bypass or Brake, the drone brakes if it detects an obstacle during the route. Set to Off, it can't avoid anything.
  • Download the map. Connect the controller to the internet and load the map before adding points on it.
  • Before takeoff, the map is the only way to add waypoints. Once flying, you can also mark points where the drone is.

Plan and fly a route

  1. Tap the waypoint icon on the left of the camera view.
  2. Add waypoints on the map, or fly to each spot and add it there. Flying to the spot gives the most accurate framing.
  3. For each point, choose a camera action. If you pick None, the drone only flies the path and you run the camera yourself.
  4. Optional: add a POI. If heading and gimbal tilt are set to face the POI, the POI links to those waypoints automatically and the camera stays aimed at it.
  5. Set what happens at the end of the route and if the signal is lost.
  6. Follow the prompts to start. The drone flies the route and runs your camera actions.
  7. Tap the waypoint icon again to exit. The route saves to the Library.

Use the rolling gimbal

The Mini 5 Pro's gimbal can roll through 225 degrees. DJI lists Waypoint Flight among the modes that can drive that rotation, so you can build a slow, turning reveal into a repeatable route. Test it at a safe height first.

Safety on autopilot

  • The path curves between points. The drone can fly lower than your waypoint heights between them. Clear trees, poles and roofs below the route.
  • Repeat from the same takeoff spot, since heights are measured from takeoff.
  • Signal-lost action: in the EU it can't be set to Continue. In the US you can choose it, but RTH or Hover is the safer pick for most pilots.
  • Night routes: DJI says the vision sensors need more than about 1 lux of light. Below that, only the forward LiDAR senses obstacles. Plan night routes higher and slower.
  • Rules don't change: keep the drone in sight, stay at or below 400 ft, and get LAANC approval in controlled airspace.

Good uses

  • Same-spot time-lapses of a build site, garden or skyline.
  • Real estate: an identical reveal on every listing.
  • Night cityscapes: plan the route in daylight, then fly it again after dark.
