With palm control or your phone, the DJI Neo can fly up to 50 m (164 ft) away and 30 m (98 ft) high, and those limits are fixed. With a controller, like the RC-N3, or with goggles, it switches to DJI's O4 video link. DJI rates that link at up to 10 km (6.2 mi) under FCC rules with the Goggles N3. In practice the battery is the limit: DJI says a full charge covers about 7 km (4.3 mi) of total flight.

Range by control method
Palm Control and Mobile App Control (Wi-Fi). DJI lists an effective Wi-Fi range of 50 m, and the Neo is capped at 50 m distance and 30 m height in these modes. DJI notes the real distance and image quality depend on your phone's Wi-Fi, so hold the phone with its front facing the Neo. There's no Return to Home in these modes.
RC-N3, RC-N2 or DJI RC 2. A controller connects over O4, which unlocks normal flight limits you set in DJI Fly, Return to Home, and Normal, Sport and Cine modes. DJI's Neo spec sheet doesn't list a separate range figure for the RC-N3, so we won't quote one.
Goggles N3 or Goggles 3. DJI's Goggles N3 specs list a max transmission distance with the Neo of 10 km (FCC) or 6 km (CE), measured in open, unobstructed conditions, with a 1080p/60fps feed.
What really limits the Neo's range
- Battery. DJI's max flight distance is 7 km per battery at a steady 8 m/s in calm air. That's the whole trip, out and back, so the practical radius is much less, especially with any wind.
- The law. In the US you must keep the drone within visual line of sight. A 135 g drone becomes hard to see within a few hundred feet. Goggles don't count as line of sight; you need a visual observer. See Part 107 and the TRUST test.
- Interference. Trees, buildings, Wi-Fi routers and power lines all cut range. DJI suggests staying at least 15 m from buildings for good positioning.
- No obstacle sensing. The Neo can't see what's in front of it, so flying far out of sight risks a crash.
Distance limit settings
With a controller, DJI Fly lets you set a max distance from the Home Point. When you hit it, you'll see "Max flight distance reached" and the Neo won't fly farther. Set an RTH altitude above trees and buildings; DJI's default is 30 m.
Which setup do you need?
- Selfies and vlogs within 50 m: the drone alone and your phone.
- Landscapes and reveals: the RC-N3, for Return to Home and steady control.
- Immersive FPV: Goggles N3 with the RC Motion 3. See Neo with goggles.
