Can you fly the DJI Neo indoors?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Yes. DJI designed the Neo to fly both indoors and outdoors, and its full propeller guards make it one of the safer drones to use inside. Indoors it can't use GPS, so it holds position with its downward vision system, which needs normal room lighting (over 15 lux) and a floor with some texture. Give it space, because it has no obstacle avoidance.

Flying the Neo indoors
DJI designed the Neo to fly indoors and out. Indoors it holds position with its downward vision system, which needs light and a patterned surface below it.

What the Neo needs indoors

Condition Good Problem
Light Normal room lighting Dim rooms, under 15 lux
Floor Rugs, wood grain, patterned tile Plain white floors, glossy tile, glass
Height 0.5 to 10 m above the floor Very low or very high ceilings
Space Open rooms, gyms, halls Tight hallways, cluttered rooms

When positioning fails, the Neo switches to Attitude mode and drifts. In Palm Control and phone control, DJI says it lands automatically if positioning fails. DJI also says to avoid flying in confined spaces or poor light for this reason.

Best control mode indoors

  • Palm Control: great for quick selfie clips in a big room. Choose short-distance modes like Spotlight or Circle with a small radius, and set distance and height in DJI Fly first.
  • Phone control: the virtual joysticks give you slow, precise movement. Good for beginners.
  • RC-N3: use Cine mode for smooth, slow moves.
  • Goggles and RC Motion 3: DJI's FAQ says the Neo can fly close to the ground and indoors for an immersive view. Start in Normal mode, not Sport.

Indoors, weak GPS also means the Neo limits height to 30 m above the takeoff point (or 2 m in poor light), which won't matter in most buildings.

Rooms and things to avoid

  • Ceiling fans and box fans. Turn them off; their airflow pushes the Neo around.
  • Mirrors and big windows. Reflective surfaces confuse the vision system.
  • Stairwells. A sudden change in floor height can make it climb or drop.
  • People and pets close by. The guards protect against light touches, but DJI says not to grab the Neo in flight. Keep kids and pets back.
  • Your Wi-Fi router. DJI lists routers and other Wi-Fi devices as interference sources, which can matter in phone control.

Indoor FPV tips

Indoor FPV with goggles is fun, but take it slow. Keep Easy ACRO tricks outdoors; DJI requires at least 1.5 m of height and wants clear space all around. In Manual mode, DJI says to be careful below 5 m or with obstacles within 5 m, so manual flying belongs outside. See Neo goggles.

Is indoor flying regulated?

The FAA regulates the national airspace, not the inside of a building, so FAA rules don't cover a flight entirely indoors. You still need permission from whoever owns or runs the building, and many venues ban drones. A stadium open to the sky counts as outdoors. More in flying a drone indoors, and for outdoor rules see Neo license.

Indoors at night

A lit room works. A dark room doesn't: palm takeoff may fail and the Neo can drift. See Neo night mode and Neo obstacle avoidance.

The DJI Neo is one of the easiest drones to fly inside. For indoor FPV, add the Goggles N3 and RC Motion 3.
