Osmo Action 5 Pro vs Action 4: worth the upgrade?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The Osmo Action 5 Pro is the better camera: DJI rates its battery at 240 minutes vs 160, it adds 47 GB of built-in storage, about 40 MP photos (vs about 10 MP), brighter OLED touchscreens, Subject Tracking, SuperNight low-light mode and waterproofing to 20 m instead of 18 m. Both use a 1/1.3-inch sensor and shoot 4K/120 in 10-bit, so video in good light looks similar. If you already own an Action 4, upgrade for battery, storage and photos. If you're buying new, the $88 difference at our prices makes the Action 5 Pro the easy pick.

What DJI changed

From DJI's own Action 5 Pro FAQ, the upgrades over the Action 4 are:

  • A next-generation 1/1.3-inch sensor with up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range and 4K/60 low-light imaging.
  • Upgraded front and rear OLED high-brightness touchscreens.
  • Wi-Fi 6 for faster transfers to your phone.
  • 47 GB of built-in storage, so a forgotten microSD card doesn't end the day.
  • Up to 4 hours of battery life.
  • Subject Tracking mode, which keeps a person centered when you shoot in a wider frame.
  • SuperNight mode for cleaner video after dark.

The Action 5 Pro also connects directly to up to two DJI Mic transmitters; the Action 4 takes one.

What stays the same

Size and weight are almost identical (145 vs 146 g), both use DJI's magnetic quick-release mounts, both have RockSteady and HorizonSteady stabilization, and accessories like mounts carry over. Check battery compatibility before you buy spares; see Action 5 Pro batteries and accessories.

Should you upgrade?

  • Upgrade if you run out of battery, film at night, want photos you can print, or travel without a laptop and like having built-in storage.
  • Keep your Action 4 if you mostly film daytime sports clips and edit on a computer anyway.
  • Buying your first action camera? Get the Action 5 Pro. The battery alone justifies the difference.
