Osmo Pocket 3 face tracking not working: fixes

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

An Osmo Pocket 3 that won't follow your face is usually in a mode where tracking is switched off, such as Low-Light, Slow Motion, Timelapse or Med-Tele, or the face features aren't turned on. Switch to Video or Photo mode, then turn on FT (Selfie) in the control menu for selfies, or double-tap your face on the screen to start ActiveTrack.

Does tracking work in this mode?
Per DJI's manual and release notes, ActiveTrack is also off in Panorama, Motionlapse, Med-Tele and with SpinShot on.

The three ways the Pocket 3 tracks you

  1. ActiveTrack. In Photo or Video mode, double-tap the subject on the touchscreen. A box appears and the gimbal follows it. Press the joystick or tap the screen to stop.
  2. FT (Selfie). Swipe down for the control menu and turn on FT (Selfie). When the camera turns to face you, it finds and follows your face automatically.
  3. Face Auto-Detect. In Video mode, tap the smart gimbal icon and choose Face Auto-Detect. DJI says the camera follows the face closest to the center of the frame.

If you only turned the camera toward yourself and expected it to follow, FT (Selfie) is the setting you need.

When tracking is unavailable

DJI's manual says ActiveTrack doesn't work in:

  • Panorama
  • Low-Light
  • Slow Motion (1080p 8x and 4K 4x)
  • Timelapse, Hyperlapse and Motionlapse
  • With SpinShot on

DJI's release notes add that ActiveTrack isn't supported in Med-Tele mode (the 2x, 40 mm-equivalent view). If you zoomed with Med-Tele, turn it off.

Other fixes

  • Light. Tracking needs to see your face. Very dark rooms or strong backlight make it lose you. Face a window or light.
  • Distance and size. Keep your face clearly visible and not too small in the frame. Hats, masks and sunglasses can make it harder.
  • Gimbal mode. Use Follow mode. In FPV mode the camera rotates freely with the handle.
  • Don't fight it. Pushing the joystick or tapping the screen cancels tracking.
  • Too slow or jerky? Adjust Rotational Speed (the walking person icon in the control menu).
  • Update firmware. Connect to DJI Mimo and install any update. DJI has improved tracking in several releases.
  • Restart. Power off and on to clear a stuck state.

Tracking in DJI Mimo or while streaming

In DJI Mimo, draw a box around the subject on the live view to start ActiveTrack, and tap the X to stop. DJI's May 2024 firmware added ActiveTrack while livestreaming in webcam mode, so update if it isn't available there.

Still not tracking

Try a factory reset (swipe down, Settings, Factory Reset). This clears your settings, so note them first. If tracking still fails in Video mode with good light, start a repair.
