"Gimbal protection" on an Osmo Pocket 3 means the gimbal stopped its motors because the camera couldn't move where it needed to. It usually happens when the Pocket 3 is powered on lying down, upside down or in a pocket, or when a finger, the cover or a lens touches the camera. Hold it upright with nothing touching the camera and the message clears. The "keep device upright" prompt is telling you exactly that.

Why DJI gimbals do this
The Pocket 3 uses a three-axis mechanical gimbal with small, precise motors. If something stops the camera from reaching its position, the motors would strain against it. Gimbal protection pauses them to avoid damage. It's a safety feature, not a fault, when it clears quickly.
Common causes
- Powered on lying flat or sideways. The Pocket 3 recenters the camera at startup. If it's on its side or face-down, it can't.
- Powered on in a pocket or the cover. Rotating the screen or pressing the Shutter button by accident while it's stored. The camera hits the fabric or case.
- Something touching the camera. A finger, a strap, the wide-angle lens fitted badly, or a filter that isn't seated.
- Moving the camera by hand while it's on. Forcing the camera fights the motors.
- Extreme angles. Holding it at an odd angle, or overhead, can push an axis to its limit.
- Recovering after a bump. A knock or drop can trigger protection while the gimbal resets.
How to clear it
- Hold the Pocket 3 upright in your hand, screen toward you, camera free.
- Remove anything touching the camera: the cover, lens or filter, or your fingers.
- Wait a moment. The gimbal often recovers on its own.
- Recenter. Press the joystick twice.
- Restart. Power off, then power on while holding it upright.
If it keeps coming back
- Calibrate the gimbal. Swipe down, Settings, Gimbal Calibration. Place it on a flat, stable surface and don't touch it. DJI says calibration reduces drift from user error or magnetic interference.
- Check accessories. Remove the wide-angle lens and filters and test without them. Make sure the lens is seated fully and doesn't rub.
- Update firmware in DJI Mimo with the battery above 15%.
- Factory reset from Settings if the problem started after a settings change.
- Store it powered off. Prevent accidental power-on by keeping it in the cover only when off, and check the screen is fully rotated to the off position.
When it's damage
If the message appears every time with the camera clear and upright, the camera sits crooked, a motor buzzes or clicks, or it started after a drop, the gimbal may be damaged. Don't keep power cycling it. Start a repair. Accidental damage is covered if you have DJI Care Refresh for Pocket 3.
For a camera that won't move or lock without a protection message, see Pocket 3 gimbal not moving. The same idea applies to drones: read gimbal motor overloaded. More about the camera is on the Osmo Pocket 3 product page.
