A gimbal camera is a camera with a motorized stabilizer built around the lens, so the image stays smooth and level while you walk, run or hold it at arm's length. Instead of mounting a camera on a separate gimbal, the camera and the 3-axis gimbal are one small device. DJI's Osmo Pocket 3 is the best-known example: a 179 g handheld with a 1-inch sensor on a 3-axis gimbal that fits in a jacket pocket.

How a gimbal camera works
Tiny motors on three axes (pan, tilt and roll) counteract your hand movement in real time, guided by a gyro sensor. Because the stabilization is physical, the camera doesn't need to crop the image the way electronic stabilization does. The gimbal can also move on purpose: follow a face with ActiveTrack, pan smoothly for a reveal, or flip to face you. Background in what is a gimbal.

Gimbal camera vs other options
- Phone on a gimbal: an Osmo Mobile 6 turns the phone you already own into a stabilized camera. Cheaper, but quality depends on your phone, and setup takes longer. See Osmo Mobile 6 vs Pocket 3 and RS 4 Mini.
- Action camera: the Osmo Action 5 Pro uses electronic stabilization but is waterproof to 20 m and built for knocks. Better for sports, swimming and helmet mounts. See Osmo Action 5 Pro vs Pocket 3.
- Mirrorless camera on a gimbal: best image, much bigger kit. See best gimbal for mirrorless cameras.
"DJI handheld" and "DJI mini handheld camera"
People searching these usually mean the Osmo Pocket line. DJI's handheld range also includes the Osmo Mobile phone gimbals and the RS camera gimbals. The newer Osmo Pocket 4 isn't sold in the US because of the FCC's December 2025 action, so the Pocket 3 is the current pocket gimbal camera here. See is DJI Osmo banned.
Who should get one
- Vloggers and walk-and-talk creators
- Travelers who want better video than a phone without a bag of gear
- Parents filming kids indoors in low light
- Anyone who wants quick vertical video for social media
It isn't waterproof and the gimbal needs care; use the protective cover when you pack it. See Osmo Pocket 3 gimbal protection.
