Can the Osmo Pocket 3 take photos? Photo quality and settings

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Yes, the Osmo Pocket 3 takes photos, but it's built for video first. DJI lists single photos at about 9.4 megapixels (3072×3072 in 1:1; 16:9 photos are 3840×2160, about 8.3 MP), saved as JPEG or JPEG plus DNG RAW, and it can shoot 180° and 3×3 panoramas. There's no flash. Photo quality is good for social media and small prints, but a modern phone or a dedicated camera gives you more resolution.

Osmo Pocket 3 photo specs
From DJI's Osmo Pocket 3 specs and manual. The camera is designed mainly for video; photos are smaller than a typical phone's but benefit from the 1-inch sensor.

Photo modes

Tap the mode icon on the screen and swipe to choose:

  • Photo: single shots, with a countdown of 3, 5 or 7 seconds if you want one. Swipe up to change aspect ratio (16:9 or 1:1).
  • Panorama: 180° takes four horizontal photos and stitches them; 3×3 takes nine photos in a grid for a wide, tall view. Stitching happens in the camera.

Press the shutter/record button to take the photo. You can also shoot remotely from the DJI Mimo app.

How good are the photos?

Strengths

  • The 1-inch sensor handles high-contrast scenes and dim light better than a small phone sensor of the same resolution.
  • DNG RAW gives you more room to recover highlights and shadows in Lightroom or similar editors.
  • The gimbal keeps the camera level, and panoramas come out straight.

Limits

  • About 9.4 MP is low by 2026 standards. You can crop a little, not a lot.
  • Fixed 20 mm-equivalent wide lens (15 mm with the wide-angle lens).
  • Photo digital zoom goes to 2x, which reduces detail.
  • No flash and no built-in light. Add a small LED light through the Expansion Adapter's cold shoe if you need fill.
  • Slowest photo shutter is 1 second, so it's not a long-exposure camera.
  • Glamour Effects are for video only.

Best photo settings

  1. Swipe left from the right edge and tap PRO.
  2. Format: JPEG + RAW if you edit; JPEG for quick sharing.
  3. Exposure: Auto works well. In tricky light, switch to M and keep ISO low (50 to 400 in daylight).
  4. White balance: Auto, or manual for consistent color across a set.
  5. Focus mode: Single for still subjects. Tap the screen to choose the focus point. Minimum focus distance is 20 cm.

Turn on the grid in Settings to keep horizons level.

Grabbing photos from video

Because the video is sharper and more flexible, many people shoot 4K video and pull still frames from it. DJI says Mimo can save video screenshots as photos or Live Photos on supported phones. A 4K frame is 3840×2160, about the same as a 16:9 photo.

Getting photos off the camera

Download them in DJI Mimo, connect by USB-C, or use a card reader. Panoramas are already stitched. See how to transfer Osmo Pocket 3 files.

Is it a good "digital camera"?

As a travel video camera that also takes decent stills, yes. As a stills-first camera, no. For the Pocket 3's real strength, start with our best Osmo Pocket 3 settings, or shop the DJI Osmo Pocket 3.
