The DJI Avata 2 is rated for wind up to 10.7 m/s, which is about 24 mph or 38.5 km/h (Level 5 on the Beaufort scale). That's the most it can handle, not a comfortable flying limit. DJI turns off Easy ACRO tricks above 10 m/s and warns that Manual mode can get unstable above 7.9 m/s (about 18 mph). For relaxed FPV flying, plan on calm to moderate days with steady wind under about 15 mph and gusts well below the rating.

Avata 2 wind numbers
| Limit | m/s | mph | km/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max wind speed resistance | 10.7 | 23.9 | 38.5 |
| Easy ACRO unavailable above | 10 | 22.4 | 36 |
| Manual mode caution above | 7.9 | 17.7 | 28.4 |
| Top speed in Normal mode | 8 | 17.9 | 28.8 |
| Top speed in Sport mode | 16 | 35.8 | 57.6 |
Look at the Normal mode row. In Normal mode the Avata 2 flies at 8 m/s, so into a headwind near the rating it can barely move forward. To get home against strong wind, you may need Sport mode.
Why the rating isn't your flying limit
- Wind is stronger up high. A breezy 12 mph at ground level can be much stronger at 100 ft.
- Gusts matter more than averages. A 15 mph day with 25 mph gusts is over the rating.
- Return to Home. DJI's manual warns the drone may not be able to get back when the wind is too strong.
- Cold batteries have less power. The manual notes reduced capacity in low temperatures lowers wind resistance.
- Image quality. Strong wind shakes the footage even with RockSteady.
Flying in wind: what to do
- Check the forecast for wind and gusts at altitude, not just on the ground.
- Fly upwind first, while the battery is full, so the trip home is downwind.
- Keep extra battery. Head home at 40% or more on windy days.
- Watch for warnings. If the goggles show a wind or battery warning, turn back right away.
- Skip tricks. Easy ACRO is blocked above 10 m/s anyway, and flips in gusty air are risky.
Normal vs Sport in wind
Normal mode gives smooth, controlled footage but little speed in reserve. Sport mode doubles the top speed to 16 m/s and gives you a way home, but braking distance grows to at least 30 m. In Manual mode the drone won't level itself if a gust knocks it. See Avata 2 top speed.
Compared with other DJI drones
The 10.7 m/s rating is the same Level 5 class as the DJI Flip and most Mini drones, while larger drones like the Air 3S are rated at 12 m/s. The Avata 2's ducted props and 377 g weight help it hold a line better than the 135 g Neo. For more, read flying a drone in wind and best drone for windy conditions.
Wind plus weather
DJI also says not to fly in rain, snow or fog. A windy, wet day is a no-fly day for the Avata 2. See is the Avata 2 waterproof.
Check conditions, then go fly your DJI Avata 2. Keep a spare battery ready, since wind shortens every flight; see Avata 2 battery life.
