The DJI Avata 2 "drone only" option makes sense only if you already own compatible DJI goggles and a matching controller, because the Avata 2 can't fly without both. It works with Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 plus the RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3, and with Goggles 2 or Goggles Integra plus the RC Motion 2 or FPV Remote Controller 2. If you're starting from scratch, a full kit is cheaper than buying the pieces.

What works with an Avata 2 drone
| Goggles | Controller |
|---|---|
| DJI Goggles 3 | RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3 |
| DJI Goggles N3 | RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3 |
| DJI Goggles 2 | RC Motion 2 or FPV Remote Controller 2 |
| DJI Goggles Integra | RC Motion 2 or FPV Remote Controller 2 |
Older gear from the DJI FPV drone (FPV Goggles V2 and the first FPV remote) isn't on DJI's compatibility list. Neither are camera-drone controllers like the RC-N3 or RC 2. DJI's FAQ also says flying without goggles isn't supported.
Common reasons to buy drone only
- Replacing a crashed or lost Avata 2 when you kept the goggles and controller. Check Care Refresh first; a $49 damage claim beats a new drone. See Avata 2 protection.
- Upgrading from a DJI Neo that you fly with Goggles 3 or N3 and RC Motion 3.
- Moving from the original Avata with Goggles 2 or Integra.
What else you need
- Batteries. Check whether your listing includes one. A spare battery is $109.
- A USB-C PD charger, 30 W or more, to charge through the drone.
- A phone with DJI Fly for activation over the internet.
- Firmware updates on the drone, goggles and controller before linking. See Avata 2 firmware update.
- A microSD card (optional; the drone has 46 GB internal storage).
Then link the drone to the goggles, and the goggles to the controller. See Avata 2 not connecting to goggles if pairing fails.
Drone-only price
DJI has sold the Avata 2 aircraft on its own, but aircraft-only stock is hard to find in the US right now. Our standard kit ($934) includes the drone, Goggles 3, RC Motion 3 and a battery. If you need the aircraft alone, contact us and we'll check stock.
Kit vs drone only
| If you own... | Best buy |
|---|---|
| Nothing | Full kit (from $934) |
| Neo + Goggles N3 + RC Motion 3 | Drone only, if available |
| Original Avata + Goggles 2 | Drone only works, or a kit to upgrade to Goggles 3 |
| DJI FPV kit | Full kit |
See Avata 2 combos to compare the single-battery kit with the Fly More Combo.
Register it
At 377 g the Avata 2 needs FAA registration ($5 for 3 years) and broadcasts Remote ID. See Avata 2 license.
