How far can the DJI Mini 5 Pro fly? Range and transmission explained

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

DJI rates the Mini 5 Pro's O4+ video transmission at up to 20 km (12.4 mi) under FCC rules, in open, interference-free conditions, one way. Real-world range is shorter: DJI's own figures are about 1.5 to 4 km in cities and 4 to 10 km in suburbs. In the US you must keep the drone within your own visual line of sight anyway, so the long range mostly buys a stronger, steadier signal.

DJI's Mini 5 Pro transmission figures (upper end of each range, FCC). One-way distances; you still need power to fly back.

Transmission range by environment

From DJI's Mini 5 Pro specs (FCC):

Environment Approximate range
Unobstructed, no interference Up to 20 km (12.4 mi)
Low interference (suburb or seaside) 10 to 20 km (6.2 to 12.4 mi)
Medium interference (suburban) 4 to 10 km (2.5 to 6.2 mi)
Strong interference (urban) 1.5 to 4 km (0.9 to 2.5 mi)
Obstructed by trees 0.7 to 4.5 km (0.4 to 2.8 mi)
Obstructed by buildings 0 to 0.7 km (up to 0.4 mi)

Under CE (Europe), SRRC and MIC rules, DJI quotes 10 km because those regions allow lower transmitter power.

Range vs flight distance

Range is how far the radio link reaches. Max flight distance is how far the battery takes you: DJI rates 21 km with the standard battery and 32 km with the Battery Plus, measured flying straight in calm air until the battery ran out. A real round trip with reserve is far shorter, so DJI's range figures are one-way numbers you'd never fully use.

The legal limit in the US

Recreational and Part 107 pilots must keep the drone within visual line of sight. A 249.9 g drone becomes hard to see within a few hundred meters, far short of 20 km. DJI's own manual also says to fly within visual line of sight. You can set a Max Distance fence in DJI Fly's safety settings to keep yourself honest. See Part 107 and TRUST test.

Getting a strong signal

  • Point the antennas correctly. DJI's manual shows an optimal transmission zone; adjust the controller when DJI Fly warns of a weak signal.
  • Keep a clear line between you and the drone. Trees and buildings cut range sharply.
  • Avoid interference: Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth speakers, power lines, cell towers and broadcast towers. Turn off Wi-Fi on nearby phones if you can.
  • Fly higher (legally) to clear obstacles.
  • Use the RC 2 or a good phone on the RC-N3. DJI rates both for live view up to 1080p/60.

What happens if the signal drops

If the controller signal is lost for more than 6 seconds, the drone starts Failsafe RTH by default (you can set Hover or Land instead). Set RTH Altitude above local obstacles before every flight. See Mini 5 Pro Home Point and, for connection problems, Mini 5 Pro not connecting.

Range with propeller guards

With DJI's Quick-Release 360° Propeller Guard fitted, DJI limits the drone to 500 m distance and 120 m height. See Mini 5 Pro propeller guards.

Mini 5 Pro vs other drones

Drone Rated range (FCC)
Mini 5 Pro 20 km (12.4 mi)
Mini 4 Pro 20 km (12.4 mi)
Mini 3 10 km (6.2 mi)

Rules current as of October 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.

For height limits, see Mini 5 Pro max altitude. Shop the DJI Mini 5 Pro.
