Do DJI drones record sound? (and how to add audio)

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No. DJI drones don't have a microphone, so the videos they record are silent. That's normal, not a fault: a mic on a drone would mostly record propeller and wind noise. The exceptions are the DJI Neo, Neo 2 and Flip, which can record audio through the DJI Fly app using your phone's microphone, a DJI Mic 2 or Bluetooth earbuds, then merge it into the clip. For every other DJI drone, add music, a voice-over or separately recorded sound when you edit.

Does it record sound?
DJI's camera drones record video only. The Neo, Neo 2 and Flip are the exception: DJI Fly can record audio from your phone, a DJI Mic 2 or Bluetooth earbuds and merge it.

Why your DJI drone video has no sound

  • No microphone. DJI's spec sheets for the Mini, Air, Mavic and Avata drones list video formats but no audio recording. The files have no audio track.
  • Propellers are loud. Four props a few inches from any mic would drown out everything.
  • Controllers don't record audio into the file either.

If a clip plays with sound, it was probably a screen recording or a DJI Fly edit with music added.

Neo, Neo 2 and Flip: recording audio through the app

These small drones fly close to people for vlogs, so DJI added app recording:

  1. Connect the drone to DJI Fly on your phone (or with the RC-N3 controller).
  2. In the camera view, open settings and go to Camera, then turn on app recording before you start filming. DJI's Neo 2 manual adds a noise reduction choice here.
  3. Pick the mic: the phone's built-in mic, a DJI Mic 2 or supported Bluetooth earbuds. DJI lists compatible Bluetooth devices on each drone's downloads page.
  4. Record. A microphone icon appears in the live view.
  5. View or download the clip in the DJI Fly album, where the audio is merged in.

Files copied straight off the microSD card or over USB may not include that audio. Model details: Neo audio and Flip audio.

How to add sound to any drone video

Record it separately. Clip a wireless mic like the DJI Mic 2 or DJI Mic Mini on the speaker and record to the receiver or the transmitter's internal storage. Sync it with the drone clip in your editor using a hand clap or a spoken cue at the start. See DJI Mic 2 internal recording.

Use a ground camera for dialogue. For interviews and events, film the talking parts on an Osmo Pocket 3 or phone, and cut to drone shots with music under them.

Add music and effects. Most drone videos online use licensed music and a little ambient sound (wind, waves, city) added in the edit. DJI Fly's editor, CapCut, Premiere and DaVinci Resolve all do this. See how to edit drone footage.

What about FPV drones?

The Avata 2 records silent video too. Many FPV pilots add motor sound or music in the edit for a sense of speed. See Avata 2 audio.
