Does the DJI Mini 5 Pro record audio?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No. The DJI Mini 5 Pro has no microphone, so every video it records is silent. That's normal, not a fault. DJI's specs list the video formats, bitrates and color modes but no audio recording, and the same goes for nearly every camera drone, since a mic on the drone would only hear its own propellers. To add sound, record it separately and combine it in editing.

Mini 5 Pro and sound
DJI's Mini 5 Pro specs list video formats and bitrates but no audio recording. Sound has to come from a separate recorder or music track.

If clips play silent on your phone, computer or in DJI Fly, nothing is wrong. There's no setting to turn audio on and no hidden microphone. The DJI RC 2 and RC-N3 controllers don't add your voice to the video file either. The same is true whether the footage is on the drone's 42 GB internal storage, the microSD card, or downloaded with QuickTransfer.

Why drones don't record audio

  • Propeller noise. Four props spinning inches from a mic would drown everything out.
  • Wind. Air rushing past the drone adds constant noise.
  • Weight. At about 249.9 g, the Mini 5 Pro has no grams to spare.

How to add audio to Mini 5 Pro footage

Music. The simplest option. Add a track in your editor (DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, CapCut and others). Use licensed or royalty-free music if you'll post publicly.

Voiceover or narration. Record yourself while the drone films, then line the two up in your editor.

  • A phone voice memo works.
  • A wireless mic like the DJI Mic 2 or DJI Mic Mini gives cleaner sound. The Mic 2 transmitters can record internally, so you can clip one on and fly.
  • Clap once on camera at the start to make syncing easy.

Ambient sound. For waves, a waterfall or city noise, record a minute of sound from the ground, away from the drone, and lay it under the clip.

Recording while you fly

Set up your recorder before takeoff, start it, then fly. Don't fiddle with your phone mid-flight. If you fly with the RC-N3, your phone is your screen, so a separate recorder is safer than running a voice memo app in the background.

What about slow motion?

The Mini 5 Pro's 4K/120fps slow-motion clips play back at 30fps, four times longer than real time, as DJI explains. Even with a separate recording, live audio won't match slowed footage. Use music or sound design instead.

Get the picture right instead

Since sound gets added later, put your effort into the image: 4K at 24, 25 or 30fps, 10-bit D-Log M or HLG for grading, and ND filters for natural motion blur. See best Mini 5 Pro settings and how to record video on the Mini 5 Pro.
