Can you fly a drone in Detroit?

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Yes, with care. You can fly a drone in Detroit, including downtown, under FAA rules. Michigan law stops the city from passing its own drone ordinance. The real limits are airspace around Coleman A. Young (Detroit City) Airport and Detroit Metro, stadium flight restrictions downtown, crowds on the RiverWalk, and the Canadian border in the middle of the Detroit River.

Can you fly a drone in Detroit?
Detroit follows FAA and Michigan rules, and state law blocks city drone ordinances. Airspace, stadium restrictions, crowds and the Canadian border are the main limits.

The federal rules

  • Recreational: pass the free TRUST test. Register drones of 250 g or more and fly with Remote ID.
  • Commercial: any paid work needs a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • Everyone: stay at or below 400 ft, keep the drone in sight, and don't fly over people or moving vehicles.

Can you fly in downtown Detroit?

It's possible, but check four things first:

  • Airspace. Detroit Metro's Class B airspace and Coleman A. Young International Airport on the east side both affect the city. Windsor's airport sits just across the river. Check B4UFLY or Aloft and request LAANC where needed.
  • Stadiums. Comerica Park and Ford Field sit side by side downtown. Tigers and Lions games carry a standing flight restriction within 3 nautical miles of the stadium. That covers all of downtown and Midtown on game days.
  • Crowds and traffic. Campus Martius, the RiverWalk and Woodward Avenue are busy. You can't fly over people or moving cars.
  • Helicopters. Hospital helipads in Midtown and police and news helicopters fly low over the city.

Michigan law

Michigan's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Act (MCL 259.301 and following) bars cities and counties from regulating drone operation, so Detroit has no city drone flight ordinance. State law still makes it a crime to interfere with police or emergency crews, or to use a drone to harass someone. Recording people in private places without consent is illegal. Read drone laws in Michigan.

Property owners, including the city and private riverfront managers, still control who takes off and lands on their land. Ask before launching from a park, plaza or parking structure.

Belle Isle and Milliken State Park

Belle Isle Park and William G. Milliken State Park on the riverfront are run by the Michigan DNR. The DNR's land use order 5.1(6) allows recreational drones in state parks, but not over occupied beaches, campgrounds or within 100 yards of historic sites, and commercial flights need written permission. Belle Isle's beach, the Scott Fountain and the conservatory draw crowds, so pick quiet open areas and quiet times. See Michigan state parks.

The Canadian border

The international border runs down the middle of the Detroit River. Flying across it puts you in Canadian airspace, under Transport Canada's rules, and near Windsor's airport. The Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel are major border crossings with heavy security. Keep your drone on the US side and away from the crossings.

Better places to fly near Detroit

  • Open parks and private land outside the busiest airspace, with permission.
  • Michigan state parks and recreation areas, following DNR limits.
  • Lake St. Clair and the Lake Huron shoreline, away from beaches with people.

Weather

Wind off the river and the lakes can be strong, and winter cold drains batteries quickly. Keep spares warm and land with plenty of reserve. Read flying a drone in cold weather.

Which drone for Detroit

The DJI Mini 5 Pro weighs 249 g, so hobby flights need no FAA registration, and its 1-inch sensor handles city lights at dusk. Its obstacle sensing helps around buildings, though you should still keep it in sight. For other Great Lakes spots, see the Mackinac Bridge.
