Best GoPro and action camera settings for FPV

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The best action camera settings for FPV are 4K or 2.7K in the tallest aspect ratio your camera offers (4:3 or taller), 50 or 60 fps, in-camera stabilization off, and the widest field of view, so you can stabilize later in Gyroflow. Fix white balance around 5500K in daylight, keep ISO low, and use an ND filter if you want motion blur. This works for GoPro, DJI Osmo Action and similar cameras.

FPV action camera settings
A solid starting point for any action camera on an FPV drone. Recording unstabilized with the widest view gives Gyroflow the most image to work with.

Recommended settings

Setting FPV recommendation Why
Resolution 4K, or 2.7K for smaller files Extra pixels survive Gyroflow cropping
Aspect ratio 4:3 (or taller, if available) More frame to stabilize and reframe
Frame rate 50 or 60 fps Smooth motion, room to slow down
Stabilization Off Gyroflow does it better with raw footage
Field of view Widest Needed for accurate gyro stabilization
Color Flat or log, 10-bit More grading room
White balance Fixed, about 5500K Stops color shifts as you fly
ISO Low max, 100 to 400 Less noise in shadows
Shutter Auto, or double the frame rate with ND See below
Sharpness Low Looks more natural, sharpen in post

Stabilization: off for Gyroflow

Most modern action cameras record gyro data in the file. Gyroflow reads it and stabilizes on your computer, where you control smoothness, crop and horizon lock. To make this work:

  • Turn in-camera stabilization off.
  • Use the widest field of view.

DJI spells this out for the Osmo Action 5 Pro: to record videos with gyro data, disable EIS and set the camera FOV to Wide. GoPro cameras have their own equivalent settings; check your model's manual. If you'd rather post straight from the camera, leave stabilization on and accept some crop.

Shutter speed and ND filters

You have two choices:

  1. Auto shutter, no ND. Every frame is sharp. Fine for most freestyle, but fast footage can look choppy.
  2. Locked shutter with ND. Shutter about double the frame rate, so 1/120 s at 60 fps. In bright sun this needs roughly ND16 to ND32. It gives natural motion blur and hides some vibration.

Gyroflow can't remove blur baked into a frame, so don't go slower than double the frame rate. More on filter strengths in ND filter numbers explained.

Osmo Action 5 Pro settings for FPV

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has a 1/1.3-inch sensor, a 155° lens and 4K 4:3 recording up to 120 fps.

  • Video: 4K 4:3 at 50 or 60 fps (100 or 120 fps for slow motion).
  • EIS: off. FOV: Wide.
  • Color: D-Log M 10-bit for grading, or Normal 10-bit. Turn on Color Recovery to preview log footage normally.
  • Exposure: Pro mode, manual ISO and shutter if you use ND.

DJI provides a free Action 5 Pro D-Log M to Rec.709 LUT; see Osmo Action 5 Pro LUTs. For workflow details, read Osmo Action 5 Pro with Gyroflow and timecode.

Mounting tips

  • Weight matters. The Action 5 Pro weighs 146 g. Small quads may fly worse with a full-size action camera; lighter cameras suit them better.
  • Soft-mount or use a TPU mount to cut vibration and jello.
  • Angle the camera to match your FPV camera tilt so footage looks level in forward flight.
  • Balance props and replace damaged ones before blaming camera settings.

Editing

Stabilize in Gyroflow first, then grade and cut. See edit FPV footage with Gyroflow. If you'd rather skip the separate camera, DJI's FPV drones record stabilized 4K themselves.
