For most people, no. Modern action cameras stabilize video electronically, and on the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, RockSteady 3.0 and HorizonSteady already give smooth, level footage on helmets, bikes and chest mounts. A gimbal only earns its place for low-light walking shots, modes where electronic stabilization switches off, and slow, controlled pans. If you want gimbal smoothness, a camera with a built-in gimbal, like the Osmo Pocket 3, is usually a better buy than a gimbal for your action cam.

What action-camera stabilization already does
Electronic image stabilization (EIS) crops into the frame and shifts each image to cancel shake. On the Osmo Action 5 Pro:
- RockSteady 3.0 and 3.0+: everyday stabilization; 3.0+ crops slightly more for stronger smoothing.
- HorizonBalancing: corrects tilt within ±45°, at up to 4K (16:9) and 60fps.
- HorizonSteady: locks the horizon through a full 360° rotation, at 1080p or 2.7K (16:9) up to 60fps.
That covers mountain biking, skiing, motorcycles, running and most travel vlogging. A mechanical gimbal adds weight and another battery, and it can break in a crash that a bare action camera survives.
When a gimbal still helps
- Low light. EIS works best with fast shutter speeds. Indoors or at night the shutter slows, and you get motion blur that EIS can't remove, which looks like a shimmer or judder. A mechanical gimbal keeps the camera physically steady.
- Slow motion and timelapse. DJI says the Action 5 Pro doesn't apply EIS in Slow Motion or Timelapse modes.
- Controlled moves. Smooth pans, tilts and follow shots you steer with a joystick.
- Full field of view. EIS crops. A gimbal lets you shoot with stabilization off and keep the widest view.
Can you put a GoPro or Osmo Action on a phone gimbal?
Not as a supported setup. Phone gimbals are balanced for phones. The Osmo Mobile 6, for example, is rated for phones from 170 to 290 g and 67 to 84 mm wide, and the Action 5 Pro weighs 146 g, below that range, with a different shape. Details: Osmo Mobile 6 with a GoPro or Osmo Action.
Better options than adding a gimbal
- Turn on the right stabilization. HorizonSteady for helmets and handlebars, RockSteady 3.0+ for handheld walking. See Osmo Action 5 Pro horizon lock and tracking.
- Use an ND filter in bright light. A slower shutter adds natural motion blur, so stabilized footage looks less jittery.
- Stabilize in post with Gyroflow. On the Action 5 Pro, turn EIS off and set the FOV to Wide to record gyro data.
- Get a camera with a built-in gimbal. The Osmo Pocket 3 has a 3-axis mechanical gimbal and a 1-inch sensor, which helps most in exactly the low-light walking shots where action cams struggle. It isn't waterproof or built for crashes, though. See Osmo Action 5 Pro vs Pocket 3.
Quick picks
- Sports, POV, water: an action camera on its own.
- Walking vlogs, evenings, smooth B-roll: a gimbal camera like the Pocket 3.
- Both: many creators carry one of each.
