Pick the camera that matches how you film. A gimbal vlogging camera like the Osmo Pocket 3 gives the smoothest walk-and-talk footage with the least effort. An action camera like the Osmo Action 5 Pro or a GoPro is tough, waterproof and mountable, built for POV and sports. A mirrorless camera gives the best image quality and lens choice, but it's bigger and takes more setup. A camcorder still makes sense for long events with optical zoom.

Gimbal vlogging camera
The Osmo Pocket 3 puts a 1-inch sensor on a 3-axis mechanical gimbal. The gimbal physically cancels hand shake and follows your face, so walking footage looks smooth without cropping. Its 2-inch screen rotates for vertical video, and it records 4K/120 and 10-bit D-Log M.
- Strengths: smoothest handheld footage for its size, good low light for a pocket camera, instant to start.
- Limits: not waterproof, the gimbal needs care, fixed wide lens.
Action camera (GoPro, Osmo Action)
The Osmo Action 5 Pro has a 1/1.3-inch sensor, an ultra-wide lens and electronic stabilization. DJI rates it waterproof to 20 m without a case and up to 240 minutes of recording at 1080p/24fps. Front and rear screens make selfie framing easy.
- Strengths: survives drops, rain and water; mounts on helmets, bikes and cars; very wide view.
- Limits: smaller sensor than a 1-inch camera, so dim scenes get noisy; electronic stabilization crops the image; the ultra-wide look isn't flattering for close talking-head shots.
Mirrorless camera
Interchangeable-lens cameras have much larger sensors (APS-C or full frame), so they win in low light and can blur the background. You can pick any lens, from wide to telephoto.
- Strengths: best image quality, real background blur, photos and video in one.
- Limits: heavier, costs more once you add lenses, and handheld walking shots need in-body stabilization or a gimbal like the DJI RS 4 Mini.
Camcorder and digital compact
Camcorders offer long optical zoom and long recording times, which still suits weddings, sports from the sidelines and school events. Digital compacts with 1-inch sensors are pocketable all-rounders for photos and simple vlogs, but they don't have a gimbal. See Osmo Pocket 3 vs Sony ZV-1F and Canon G7X.

Don't forget audio
Built-in mics on any small camera pick up wind and room echo. A wireless lav fixes most of it. The Pocket 3 and Action 5 Pro both connect directly to DJI Mic 2 transmitters. See best wireless mic.
