The DJI Mavic 3 Classic Drone Only version comes without a remote controller or charger. To fly it you need a controller you already own from DJI's supported list, the RC-N1, DJI RC or DJI RC Pro, plus a USB-C PD charger of about 65W for the battery. It only makes sense if you already have those from another Mavic 3 or a compatible older drone. Otherwise the standard kit is the simpler buy.

What the Drone Only box leaves out
From DJI's FAQ and manual:
- No remote controller. Use an RC-N1, DJI RC or DJI RC Pro you already own.
- No charger. DJI recommends a PD 65W charger for the Intelligent Flight Battery.
The other two DJI versions include a controller and a charger: the Mavic 3 Classic with RC-N1, and the Mavic 3 Classic with DJI RC.
Controllers that work, and ones that don't
| Controller | Works with Classic? |
|---|---|
| DJI RC-N1 | Yes |
| DJI RC | Yes |
| DJI RC Pro | Yes |
| RC-N2, RC-N3 | No |
| DJI RC 2, RC Pro 2 | No |
If your controller came with a Mini 4 Pro, Air 3, Air 3S or Flip, it's an O4 controller and won't fly the Classic. Details in Mavic 3 Classic controllers.
Chargers
- DJI 65W Portable Charger: about 96 minutes per battery with its attached cable.
- Mavic 3 Series 100W charging hub with DJI's 100W USB-C adapter: about 70 minutes per battery, three in sequence.
- Other USB-C chargers: DJI recommends 60W or more with PD or PPS support.
You can also charge the battery inside the drone through its USB-C port. See Mavic 3 Classic batteries and chargers.
Setup steps
- Charge the battery to wake it from hibernation. DJI ships batteries in hibernation mode.
- Update your controller and DJI Fly to the latest versions.
- Remove the storage cover and unfold the front arms, then the rear arms.
- Power on and link the controller in DJI Fly.
- Activate the drone and update its firmware. See Mavic 3 Classic firmware update.
- Register it with the FAA ($5, valid 3 years), since it weighs 895 g. See FAA registration.
Does drone only save money?
Only if you truly have the controller and charger already. A replacement RC-N1 or DJI RC plus a 65W charger can cost more than the difference between the Drone Only version and a full kit. We sell the Classic as a standard kit with the RC-N1 and 65W charger ($1,407) and as a Fly More Combo with the DJI RC ($2,149). See Mavic 3 Classic combo.
When drone only makes sense
- You're replacing a crashed or lost Mavic 3 Classic and kept the controller.
- You own a Mavic 3 or Mavic 3 Cine and want a second airframe that shares batteries and controllers.
- You're adding a second drone for a two-pilot team that already has spare controllers.
Looking for a drone-only replacement after a crash? DJI Care Refresh may be cheaper; see how to claim DJI Care Refresh. Or contact us and we'll check availability of the Drone Only version for you.
