Buying the DJI Mini 5 Pro drone only: what else you need

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

DJI doesn't list a drone-only Mini 5 Pro on its official store; every kit there includes a controller, starting with the RC-N3 standard kit. You can't fly the Mini 5 Pro without a compatible controller, so a "drone only" listing only makes sense if you already own a DJI RC 2, RC-N2, RC-N3 or RC Pro 2. For everyone else, the standard kit at $835 is the cheapest way in.

Do you need the drone only?
Controller compatibility from DJI's Mini 5 Pro release notes. Old Mini batteries and hubs don't carry over: DJI lists only Mini 5 Pro batteries.

What a drone-only Mini 5 Pro needs to fly

  1. A compatible controller. DJI's Mini 5 Pro release notes list firmware for the RC-N3, RC 2, RC-N2 and RC Pro 2. The RC-N1 and the original DJI RC from older Minis aren't on the list.
  2. The DJI Fly app. DJI says the Mini 5 Pro works only with DJI Fly. It's preinstalled on the RC 2; with an RC-N2 or RC-N3 you use your phone.
  3. A Mini 5 Pro battery. The drone uses its own battery model. DJI lists only Mini 5 Pro batteries as compatible, so Mini 4 Pro or Mini 3 batteries don't carry over.
  4. A USB-C PD charger. DJI's kit box lists don't include one.
  5. Spare propellers and, ideally, the storage cover that protects the gimbal in a bag.
  6. Activation and linking. Activate the drone in DJI Fly with an internet connection, then link the controller under Control > Connect to Aircraft (RC 2) or Re-pair to Aircraft (RC-N series). Keep them within 0.5 m. See Mini 5 Pro controllers.

Drone-only price math

At our prices, the standard kit is $835 with the RC-N3, and an RC-N3 alone is $142. So even if you find a body-only listing, the saving is roughly the cost of the RC-N3 at most. Weigh that against what you lose:

  • Warranty clarity. Split kits and bodies from other regions may not get US warranty service. DJI didn't officially launch the Mini 5 Pro in the US. See Mini 5 Pro in the US.
  • Activation history. A used or "open box" body may already be bound to someone's DJI account. Ask the seller to unbind it.
  • Battery. Some body-only listings include no battery.

Upgrading from a Mini 4 Pro?

Your RC 2 or RC-N2 can link to the Mini 5 Pro after a firmware update. Your Mini 4 Pro batteries, Two-Way Charging Hub and propellers aren't on DJI's Mini 5 Pro compatibility lists, so budget for new ones. Your USB-C PD charger, microSD cards and bag may still be useful. Compare the drones in Mini 4 Pro vs Mini 5 Pro.

Better value: a kit

Kit Our price Includes
Standard $835 Drone, RC-N3, 1 battery
Fly More Combo $1,209 Drone, DJI RC 2, 3 batteries, hub, bag

If you already have an RC 2, the standard kit still makes sense: you get a spare RC-N3 and a battery. See Mini 5 Pro combos.

Rules still apply

With the standard battery the drone weighs about 249.9 g, so recreational flyers don't register it with the FAA but do need the free TRUST test. Business flying needs Part 107.
