Is the DJI Mini 5 Pro waterproof? Flying in rain and over water

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

No. The DJI Mini 5 Pro is not waterproof, and DJI gives it no IP rating. DJI's FAQ says to avoid contact with water, as it may damage the drone. If it rains during a flight, return and land as soon as possible, then wait until the drone is fully dry inside and out before flying again. You can fly over water, carefully, but the sensors that help it land don't work well there.

Mini 5 Pro and water
From DJI's Mini 5 Pro FAQ and manual. DJI says to avoid contact with water and to land as soon as possible if it starts raining.

Can you fly the Mini 5 Pro in the rain?

You shouldn't. DJI's manual says not to fly in rain, snow or fog, and to operate the drone, controller, batteries and chargers in a dry environment. The body isn't sealed, the motors are open to the air, and water can short electronics or corrode connectors, with damage sometimes showing up days later.

Rain also affects how it flies and films:

  • Water on the sensor glass affects obstacle sensing. DJI says to wipe the sensors with a soft cloth.
  • Drops on the lens ruin footage.
  • Heavy fog or cloud can wet the gimbal and cause a temporary failure until it dries.
  • DJI says not to fly when visibility is under 100 m.

The controllers aren't waterproof either; DJI notes the RC 2's touchscreen isn't.

If your Mini 5 Pro gets wet

  1. Land and power off right away. Remove the battery.
  2. Wipe it dry with a soft, absorbent cloth. Don't use alcohol or solvents.
  3. Let it dry fully, inside and out, before powering on. DJI's manual warns that turning on a drone that has fallen in water may cause permanent damage.
  4. Salt water is worse. If it went into the sea, don't power it on; contact a repair center.
  5. Check before flying: gimbal movement, motors spinning smoothly, no warnings in DJI Fly.

If anything is off, see Mini 5 Pro repair or contact our repair team.

Flying over water

Over water is legal and popular, and it's where many drones are lost.

  • Don't trust the downward sensors. DJI warns the downward vision system may not work properly near water, so the drone may not avoid water below it when landing. APAS may not work properly over water.
  • Keep a strong GPS lock. DJI says not to fly over water without GNSS, because vision positioning alone can fail and the drone can drift in ATTI mode.
  • Set RTH altitude above any masts, cliffs or trees on the way back.
  • Watch the battery. Wind over open water is stronger than on shore, and the return leg is longer than you think.
  • Don't take off from a moving boat. DJI says not to take off from moving objects such as boats.
  • Land on land. Bring it back to shore or a dock rather than hand-catching. See Mini 5 Pro hand landing.

Beaches add salt spray and sand. DJI says to avoid sand getting into the drone. Wipe it down after every coastal flight.

Does insurance cover water damage?

DJI Care Refresh covers water damage. Coverage varies by model, so check DJI's Care Refresh page or ask us whether a US plan is available for the Mini 5 Pro. Without one, a drone insurance policy with hull coverage is the alternative. See Mini 5 Pro protection.

Want a tougher drone?

DJI's weather-resistant drones are enterprise models like the Matrice series, which are much larger and quote-only. For hobby flying, the answer is simply to stay dry. More in can you fly a drone in the rain.
