How to fly the DJI Neo in manual mode

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

To fly the DJI Neo in Manual mode, you need the DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 and DJI goggles (Goggles N3 or Goggles 3). Manual mode is off by default: set the controller's throttle stick so it doesn't spring back to center, enable Manual as the custom flight mode in the goggles, then switch to it in flight. Manual is full acro control with no self-leveling, hovering or auto-brake, and a top speed of 16 m/s (36 mph).

Enabling Neo Manual mode
Manual mode is off by default and only works with the DJI FPV Remote Controller 3. The Neo's status light blinks purple when it's in Manual mode.

What Manual mode is

DJI describes it as classic FPV control with the highest maneuverability. In Manual mode:

  • Self-leveling, precise hovering and auto-brake are all off. Let go of the sticks and the Neo keeps going.
  • The throttle sets thrust directly. Center stick doesn't mean hover.
  • Top speed rises to 16 m/s (36 mph), versus 8 m/s in Sport.
  • The gimbal locks to the body, so the camera tilts with the drone, like a real FPV quad.
  • The status indicator blinks purple.

What you need

Item Required?
DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 Yes, the only controller with Manual mode
Goggles N3 or Goggles 3 Yes
Latest firmware on all devices Yes
Simulator practice Strongly recommended

The RC-N3, RC Motion 3 and phone control don't offer Manual mode. The FPV Remote Controller 3 switches between Normal, Sport and Manual.

How to set it up

  1. Link the Neo, goggles and FPV Remote Controller 3, and update all firmware.
  2. Adjust the throttle stick so it doesn't recenter, following the FPV Remote Controller 3 manual.
  3. In the goggles, set the controller's custom mode to Manual.
  4. Take off in Normal mode, climb well above 5 m in an open area, then switch to Manual.
  5. Switch back to Normal to recover. DJI warns the Neo may drop into Attitude mode and drift when switching back if the vision system can't see the ground well.

DJI's limits for the Neo in Manual

DJI calls the Neo an entry-level Manual mode drone. It's good for practicing throttle control, holding altitude and level flight. DJI says it's not suited to continuous high-speed flight or moves like dives, Split-S, power loops and yaw spins, because the motors can't always recover. Be careful:

  • below 5 m, or with obstacles within 5 m,
  • when turning fast, diving or rolling rapidly,
  • above 8 m/s flight speed, or in wind over 8 m/s.

Manual mode vs Easy ACRO

"DJI Neo acro mode" can mean two things:

  • Manual mode (FPV Remote Controller 3): real acro, everything is up to you.
  • Easy ACRO (RC Motion 3): one-touch flips, rolls, 180° drifts and slides with the drone stabilizing for you. Easy ACRO can't be used with the FPV Remote Controller 3.

New to FPV? Start with Easy ACRO. See Neo flips and FPV flight modes.

Legal reminder

Goggles don't satisfy visual line of sight in the US. Fly with a visual observer beside you and stay below 400 ft. See Neo license.

Set up FPV with the DJI Neo and Goggles N3. For a bigger acro-ready drone, see Neo alternatives.
