Osmo Action 4 for skiing and snowboarding: setup and settings

UPDATED NOVEMBER 2026

The Osmo Action 4 is a good ski and snowboard camera. DJI rates it to operate at -20° C (-4° F) and to record up to 150 minutes at that temperature in its lab test, and it's waterproof to 18 m without a case, so snow and spray aren't a problem. Mount it on a helmet or chest for runs, or on an extension pole for third-person shots. Shoot 4K/60, nudge exposure up a little for bright snow, and keep spare batteries warm in an inside pocket.

From DJI's Osmo Action 4 specs. Battery figures were measured at 1080p/24fps with RockSteady on, Wi-Fi off and the screen off.

Mounts for the mountain

  • Helmet (top or side): the classic point of view. Use an action-camera helmet mount and the quick-release adapter.
  • Chest: shows your hands, poles or board and makes slopes look steeper. A chest strap works over a ski jacket.
  • Extension pole: for selfie and follow shots. DJI's Skiing Combo pairs the Action 4 with an Osmo 1.5 m Extension Rod, a horizontal-vertical protective frame and two quick-release adapter mounts.
  • Avoid loose mounts. A fall at speed can rip off a camera that isn't locked. Use the locking screws, and add a tether if your mount allows one.

Best settings for snow

Setting Suggestion
Resolution 4K, 16:9 at 60 fps
Stabilization RockSteady; HorizonSteady at 2.7K for tricks and falls
Exposure Auto, with EV +0.3 to +0.7
White balance Lock it (around 5500K on sunny days)
Color Normal, or D-Log M if you plan to grade

Why raise exposure? Bright snow fools auto exposure into making it gray. A small positive EV keeps snow white. Watch the screen and back off if highlights clip.

Why lock white balance? Snow, shade and blue sky push auto white balance around, and the color shifts mid-run. A fixed setting stays consistent.

HorizonSteady keeps the horizon level through 360° of rotation, great for jumps, spins and falls. DJI supports it at 2.7K and 1080p (16:9) up to 60 fps, not 4K.

Keep it powered in the cold

Cold slows lithium batteries. To get closer to DJI's rated time:

  1. Start warm. Keep the camera and spare batteries in an inside pocket until you ride.
  2. Charge indoors only. DJI's charging range is 5° to 40° C. Don't charge a frozen battery.
  3. Carry a spare. The Osmo Action Extreme Battery Plus (1950 mAh) works with the Action 4 after a firmware update and is rated to operate down to -20° C.
  4. Save power. Turn off Wi-Fi, set the screens to turn off quickly, and record runs instead of the whole lift ride.

Lens, fog and condensation

  • Wipe snow off with a soft cloth, not your glove, which can scratch the lens cover.
  • Avoid sudden warmth. Going from the slope into a heated lodge can fog the inside of the lens and lead to condensation. Leave the camera in your bag for a while so it warms slowly.
  • Close every cover. Make sure the battery and USB-C covers are shut and the lens cover is tight before you head out.

Sound

Wind noise is hard to avoid at speed. The Action 4 has three built-in mics, but for commentary on the lift or at the bottom of the run, link one DJI Mic transmitter directly to the camera.

Action 4 or Action 5 Pro for skiing?

The Action 4 handles a full ski day well with a spare battery. The Osmo Action 5 Pro adds a bigger 1950 mAh battery as standard, built-in storage and better low-light video for late-afternoon flat light. Compare them in Osmo Action 5 Pro vs Action 4.
