For normal outdoor flying, no: the DJI Air 3S doesn't need propeller guards, and most owners never fit them. They make sense indoors, for close work near people or objects, and while you're learning. The official option is the DJI Air 3 Series Propeller Guard, which fits both the Air 3S and the Air 3.

When a guard is worth it
- Indoor flights: real estate interiors, warehouses, event spaces. A light touch on a wall or doorframe is less likely to end the flight.
- Close-up shots near buildings, vehicles or people, where a spinning prop could cut someone.
- Early flights, while you're still learning distance and control.
- Tight spaces where obstacle sensing may not see thin objects.
A guard protects against a glancing touch. It won't save the drone from a fast hit, and it doesn't make it safe to fly over or close to people.
What it costs you
| Effect | Details |
|---|---|
| Weight | About 43 g, per DJI's Air 3S manual |
| Flight time | Shorter: more weight and drag |
| Wind handling | Worse: the ring catches more air |
| APAS | Nifty bypass mode doesn't work normally with guards fitted |
| Bag space | The guard is larger than the folded drone |
DJI lists the guard's dimensions as 581.5 x 502 x 105 mm, so it won't fold up with the drone. Take it off for travel and outdoor flights.
How to fit it
The Air 3 Series Propeller Guard uses a quick-assembly design. Power the drone off, unfold the arms, then clip the guard on as shown in DJI's product information sheet. Check that every prop spins freely and doesn't touch the ring before you take off. Remove it the same way.
Safer flying without a guard
- Keep Obstacle Avoidance Action on Brake for tight spaces, so the drone stops before obstacles. See Air 3S obstacle avoidance.
- Stay out of Sport mode near anything solid; sensing is off.
- Replace damaged props right away. See Air 3S propellers.
- Don't fly over people. Recreational pilots shouldn't, and Part 107 pilots must follow the operations-over-people categories. See flying over people.
Need something smaller for indoors?
The Air 3S weighs 724 g, which is a lot of drone for a living room. For regular indoor or close-to-people filming, a smaller drone with built-in guards, like the DJI Neo or Flip, or the ducted Avata 2, is often the better tool. See flying a drone indoors and best drone for indoor real estate.
