DJI Air 3S tips and tricks

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

The best DJI Air 3S tips are simple: set your safety limits before the first flight, use the 70 mm camera more than you think, let the LiDAR help at night but don't rely on it, and use the charging hub to squeeze more from your batteries. Here are the habits and settings that make the biggest difference.

Air 3S first settings
Five minutes in DJI Fly's Safety menu prevents most early losses. Binding also makes you eligible for Care Refresh flyaway cover.

Safety settings to change first

  1. Bind the drone to your DJI account in DJI Fly. It's required for Care Refresh flyaway claims.
  2. Max Altitude 120 m in Settings > Safety, so you can't drift over 400 ft by accident. See Air 3S max altitude.
  3. RTH altitude above the tallest trees and buildings around you, every new location.
  4. Signal Lost Action: RTH.
  5. Obstacle Avoidance Action: Bypass or Brake. Use Brake in tight spaces. See Air 3S obstacle avoidance.
  6. Wait for the Home Point to record before you take off. Taking off with weak GPS caps the drone at 30 m.

Camera tips

  • Use the 70 mm tele. It compresses backgrounds, makes mountains look bigger and lets you film boats, wildlife and people from a respectful distance. See Air 3S zoom.
  • Shoot D-Log M at ISO 100 for grading, or Normal color if you don't edit. Our Air 3S best settings has full recommendations.
  • Use ND filters in daylight to keep the shutter near double your frame rate. The ND8/32/128 set covers both cameras.
  • Try Free Panorama on the tele for detailed panos of a distant subject. See Air 3S panorama.
  • Shoot vertical at 2.7K on either camera for social clips, no crop needed. See Air 3S vertical.
  • Zoom from the controller. On the RC 2, the camera control dial zooms by default. On the RC-N3, hold the custom button and turn the gimbal dial to zoom.

Flying tips

  • Cine mode for slow, smooth shots; Cruise Control for constant-speed passes.
  • Fly upwind first so the wind helps you home. The rating is 12 m/s.
  • Use Sport mode only in open sky. Sensing is off, and DJI says to allow 30 m to brake.
  • Night flights: the forward LiDAR senses obstacles ahead in the dark and supports Smart RTH, but sideways and rear sensing doesn't work at night. Keep the LiDAR window clean.
  • Point the controller antennas toward the drone for the best link.

Battery tips

  • Use the hub's power accumulation to move leftover charge from partly used batteries into one. See the charging hub.
  • Use the hub as a power bank for your phone or controller (up to 82 W over USB-C).
  • Air 3 batteries fit the Air 3S, but they don't support Off-State QuickTransfer.
  • Warm batteries in winter to at least 10° C before takeoff.
  • Fly to 20 to 25%, not zero. Real-world flights run about 36 to 38 minutes. See Air 3S battery life.

Transfer tips

  • QuickTransfer copies footage to your phone over Wi-Fi at up to 30 MB/s, and works with the drone powered off when "Allow QuickTransfer in Sleep" is on (the default).
  • For big days, plug the drone into a computer with USB-C or use a card reader. See Air 3S transfer.

Keep it legal

Register the drone ($5, 3 years), pass the TRUST test for recreational flying, and check airspace before every flight. See Air 3S license.
